The only good thing that came of these copyright laundering machines is that everyone can see the systemic hypocrisy.

AI bots downloads pay walled articles and copies pirates hooks? It's for AI... No sue Common people like Aaron Swartz do it, sent to jail or exiled (sci hub)

2

Books are expensive to produce and quite pricey to maintain, but nowhere close compared to digital computer draining water source dry, polluting soil and make loud noise disrupting entire neighborhood.

3

its also the datacenters that doesnt hallucinate on command, thats why the gop trying to destroy "truth areas"

3

We still do. Libraries and parks and playgrounds today are sooooooo much nicer and useful and prevalent than when I was a kid. We still have these.

One frees knowledge for everyone. One steals knowledge and locks it behind a paywall.

25

Now they are litterally scavenging/destroying, almost even burning books just do digitilize them/feed then to AI.... Fuck these billionaires!

And you're going to tell me this doesn't consume any water? It's just as bad as data centers!

::: spoiler Obviously, /s :::

6

@psycholocomotor it may have been a better system than the last failed system but capitalism always had winners and loosers and just because it wasn't as bad we aren't bound for eternity. The acute risk today is a system change build by oligarchy and antidemocratic governments.

The people building the new data centers aren’t human tho

They’re transhumanists

Literally the enemy of humanity

Look it up

18
lemmy.world

"transhumanists"

Should be in quotes. "Ubermensch" is what comes more to mind.

2
BabyVireply
lemmy.world

They're only transhumanist up until the human in question is trans. Basically the same way they treat free speech, rules for thee but not for me.

20
h0tbeefreply
lemmy.zip

They want to become uploaded themselves into the matrix and then kill all of the humans, trans or otherwise.

Also, look up the Zizians, AI psychopathy is not limited to cis-gendered people unfortunately.

7
lemmy.dbzer0.com

I'm all for letting them upload themselves and then wiping the drives and all the backups.

6

Sounds like a more generous fate than they deserve, but it would be fine by me, so long as it is it ends with them being gone

They’re not exactly Lennie characters

Transhumanism isn't inherently anti-human. Current oligarchs are though

17
h0tbeefreply
lemmy.zip

I haven’t heard it described in any way that wasn’t hostile to humanity

Exoskeletons are starting to become a serious tool for certain jobs, mostly ones centered around lifting, that's also a part of the broader transhumanism.

Using a technology to alter a human, in the above case to be able to lift more without injuring themselves, to become superhuman in one aspect

0

Exoskeleton is a tool, you put it on when you need it and take it back off.

That’s not transhumanism, you’re still a human inside of the exoskeleton.

When I drive my car to work I don’t “become part car”, I’m just using a tool. An exoskeleton is the exact same scenario.

Wikipedia

a transhuman is a being that resembles a human in most respects but who has powers and abilities beyond those of standard humans.

Wiktionary:

  1. An enhanced human
  2. A being that transcends humanity; a superhuman being.

Merriam-Webster:

Trancending human limits : superhuman

Oxford english dictionary

Beyond the human; superhuman.

None of those make it inherently anti-human. That's like saying a man who wants to be a woman is also anti-man.

If I want to be stronger or smarter or anything through technological means, why would that make me anti-human? I can even be prohuman despite being transhuman.

4
h0tbeefreply
lemmy.zip

I’m glad you found the definition. Go people who call themselves, trans humanists believe, because it is antihuman.

Look up TESCREAL

And no, it’s not the same as saying a trans woman is anti-man, because trans. Women don’t want to exterminate all of the men after they complete their transition.

If you want to be stronger, go to the gym. If you want to be smarter, read more and learn critical thinking skills. Their technology will not help you realize either of those goals.

1
lauhareply
lemmy.world

Look, silicon valley didn't invent transhumanism in 2023. It's at least half a century older. TESCREAL is clearly antihuman but just because billionaires want to use transhumanism for bad purposes doesn't make it inherently bad. Look up definition of inherently.

I wasn't using word trans there because it wasn't my point. Just because I want to improve myself with technology doesn't make me evil. Maybe the evil part is exterminating humans, not improving humans who want to be improved. Maybe forcing an ideology on othet people is the evil part? Transhumanism itself has nothing to do with killing.

Sentences in your last paragraph are so broke I have no idea what you are saying.

0

I was doing speech to text at work, hence the broken paragraph, but I’ve fixed it now.

I know what inherently means, that’s not exactly a $10 word, but good job.

What technology are you imagining augmenting yourself with then?

1
lemmy.ml

Look, silicon valley didn’t invent transhumanism in 2023.

No, but it got jammed together with the rest of the TESCREAL bundle and you can't just ignore that.

I'm 100% in favor of human augmentation, life extension, mind uploads, all that shit.

But they're not in favor of something that will be for everyone. They're in favor of something that will be reserved for an elite few so they can legally hunt us all down like deer.

0

I'll reiterate myself then. Maybe the evil part is hunting down people then?

While technically correct, fascism and transhumanism are deeply intertwined in their quest to eliminate suffering through technology. That's pretty much what the Nazis propagated with genocide as their tool of choice to achieve a "healthy race" or whatever. You will see a lot of self proclaimed transhumanists (and especially the rich ones) are really just anti-humanists in their methods. Elon Musk doesn't want to develop brain chips to cure illnesses. He lies. He wants to own us.

3
lauhareply
lemmy.world

When you say "a lot of" you are talking about less than ten people. They are just the loudest ones because they literally own their media platforms. I'm sure there are orders of magnitude more scientists and just scifi fans who dream of transhumanism for the good.

Have you considered that maybe rich are inherently evil? Or maybe forcing the thing on other people is the evil part, not the thing itself?

1

The Autism speaks movement is far bigger than ten people so I have to strongly disagree here.

1

Yeah... And who will be able to pay for these "upgrades"? The ones that have them, will be the "real ones". The ones that not, will be the ones who are to eliminate, or to sell the cure for the illness of being a human without any tech inside.

1

Are you killing everyone who can't affors as fancy phone as you? Are you killing homeless people because they don't live in a house like you? Am I suddenly evil if I glue a helmet on my head permanently?

Evil people will do evil stuff what ever means they want and that doesn't make transhumanism inherently evil.

sh.itjust.works

Transhumanists are human. Holding a certain belief, even if it's an awful one, doesn't make you an alien or reptile or something.

3

The beliefs they hold are unbecoming of a human

They would eagerly shed the title of human themselves if they were intellectually capable enough to produce the technology they fantasize about. Instead, they’re destroying the environment for a moronic word guessing machine.

They don’t want the title, and frankly they’re not deserving of it

0

Transhumanist aren't anti-humanism???

It got infected by corpo bastards and they created a splinter group of fasc-transhumanism

But it's a leftist ideal originally, and still has lots of leftist philosophers that believe in it. Popularised by Aldous Huxley's (Brave New World author) brother, Julian

A simple idea: to merge humanity and artificial to make humans that are able to customise their selves as easily as changing clothes, and to defeat death

Some existing not fasc transhumanist factions:

  • Abolitionism - complete removal of all suffering, through technology
  • Equalism - even redistribution of all resources, through technology
  • Postgenderism - complete removal of gender, through artificial wombs, artificial penis with functioning ejaculate, etc, so that people can change gender and sex as easily as clothes, through technology
  • Technogaianism - applying transhumanist ideals to all of nature, to restore Earth's environment and developing safe, clean, alternative technology

Really? "The latter" is a fairly advanced English-speaking concept.

0

Idk, don't speak it every day. Not to natives atleast. After years of that the decline is clearly visible.

That's a pretty room, but it doesn't seem ideal for a library. If you're trying to study / concentrate it would be loud: too many people, a big open space with hard surfaces, etc.

If you were waiting to meet up with a friend at the library, that's a great room for that -- as long as when that friend arrives you're allowed to talk to them at a normal volume. But, you don't need a room that huge for just meeting up at the library.

If you were allowed to just hang out and chat at normal volume, that would be nice. Especially in places with awful, cold winters, a big, open space like that would be so nice when you're always stuck inside. But, with all those hard surfaces people would get louder and louder to make themselves overheard over all the other noise.

If the library hosted events of various kinds, that would be an amazing event space. Science fair type things, science demonstrations, a reading by an author followed by a Q&A, a charity ball, etc. It just seems not ideal for quiet reading, studying, etc.

Oh those are lamps. First I was thinking there’s a bunch of storm troopers reading at those tables.

10

There is a bunch of stormtroopers reading at those tables.

They simply don't wear their uniforms at the moment, right.

10

won't be long before they get transformed into shopping centers. or convention halls! they are empty most of the time, and the small community ones are getting closed.

Nothing wrong with data centers or information in digital formats, plenty of evil has been done using paper and ink as well. Fetishizing print makes no sense to me as a response to shitty practices.

1
lemmy.world

books cost an initial investment and returns on that investment with an unlimited amount based on the longevity of the book.

data centers have a high initial investment with a similar ROI but lack the longevity and includes expensive long term maintenance.

books are a better investment, and I'm saying that as someone who works in big tech.

Digital information can be copied indefinitely. Every copy can be perfect, no degradation. It can be searched, have embedded cross-references and sent around the world in seconds. Books suck as a medium in comparison, and that's just for text.

1
lemmy.world

Digital information can be copied indefinitely.

true, but books can be printed indefinitely too.

Every copy can be perfect, no degradation.

Untrue. data degradation is a real thing and can result in complete data loss or corruption. even if you store the data in the best case scenario it's not a matter of if, but when.

Books similarly can be damaged but are often repairable unless completely destroyed.

It can be searched, have embedded cross-references and sent around the world in seconds.

We used to call that research when books were the primary source of knowledge. indices and glossaries still exist, you know?

Books suck as a medium in comparison, and that's just for text.

data can be rewritten because it is stateless. this allows overbearing individuals to literally change how history is remembered.

can't do that with books. once printed, they stay printed forever.

books are a more favorable medium when you account for corruption, propaganda, and environmental impacts. even the paper they are printed on can be recycled, further reducing environmental impacts. can't say that about data.

don't be mad, thank a book you can even read this.

The type of data center they build now. Ever shocked watching the film Matrix? Well now you have to get used to it.

Edit: Was in fact AI, you have the right to call me a gullible, idiotic sh't.

-4
lemmy.world

Every data center I've ever been in has not looked like this.

What is the point of the overhead walkway? Why the blue lights? Way too many doors to get in and out. There aren't clear definitions of hot aisles and cold aisles...

9
mercreply
sh.itjust.works

Yeah, this looks like AI slop. The racks aren't tall enough, the aisles are too wide, there's no cooling / networking / power on top of the racks, the Blinkenlights are too white...

5

3 years I felt confident that I would never do something like this. 3 years. Damn. I've failed as a self proclaimed "technically ept person".

1

The guy was right, and the racks are not in frame, some are distorted.

1
lemmy.zip

You don't build anything like that without exploiting a lot of people.

-4
lemmy.ml

Well yeah, that particular one is the French Royal library, obviously built to be a monument to French superiority, but in general, the working class building a library for itself isn't exploitative.

Buildings like that one (way over the top) have traditionally been built by slaves and/or built with profits from colonisation, invasion etc.

The post in that context says that humans just can't do the right thing.

The intention is of course just that a library is a real data centre.

-3

Buildings like that one (way over the top) have traditionally been built by slaves and/or built with profits from colonisation, invasion etc

You get similar styles in communist countries when the building exists to serve the public. The USSR would often include a requirement for a portion of the budget go to local artists, so you ended up with no less ornamentation.
