Damn. They forgot the whole Greenland thing real fast.

Plus, Microsoft products are shitty. What the hell

No doubt Microsoft bribed the right people to achieve this outcome

I doubt it. Knowing the Danish government it is a combination of this project being slightly more expensive than Microslop, combined with that cost not translating into enough political goodwill from the voters (Danish voters are largely very ignorant or at the very least indifferent to questions of open source, digital privacy and all that stuff).

Remember a time when politics and media did an actual job in explaining context? Something like "selling our private data to and making us dependent on companies in a country threatening to annex Greenland is insanely stupid"...

Follow the money.

Microsoft acquired Danish company Navision some years ago (the product is AFAIK called Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central these days). The main development center for the product(s) are still in Denmark, making the Danish govt. well disposed towards Microsoft products even despite US threats of war, MS sanctioning ICC personnel etc.

... in Denmark, yes? I feel like that's an important part of this?

The latter:

The Ministry of Digitization has quietly put its pilot project with an alternative to Microsoft Office in the grave.

Dropped as in no longer trying to replace MSOffice with Collabra.

well, apparently every European country needs to promote its own Microsoft Office competitor. In germany, we have just started with openDesk Suite 😅

In the end it is more important that the file you produce could be read (correctly) by someone else than that both use the same Office.

Have you ever tried to edit a PDF? Also, technically PDF is a proprietary format controlled by Adobe, just like OOXML is an "open" format, controlled by Microslop.

that was the original quote i replied to, nothing about editing in there as far as i can see

My second point still stands: PDF is a semi-open format that allows (and uses) proprietary extensions.

Bad move, I bet they will regret it in the future.

Free software, that multiple suppliers, local suppliers, can provide, fix and maintain, is the only viable path for sovereign governments.

13

they=Denmark or they=the people getting paid to sell out to the US as usual?

As there are barely any consequences for open corruption nowdays I'm pretty sure the latter will not have any reason for regrets.

The EU is taking Musk's approach to business: promise everything, deliver nothing

8

And you are taking the Russian approach to news on Europe with your comment. The EU had nothing to do with it.

3

You do realise that this was Denmark, right? The EU probably had very little (ie nothing) do do with this decision at all. This is why.

11

Disappointing; but practice makes perfect. They have a new tool in negotiations, and can try to swap again the next time people wake up to sovereignty risks.

Breaking: 'Digitization Ministry' changes name to 'Ministry of Digitization' for 5 minutes before deciding to switch to Linux.

New ministry name to be decided after issues with sound drivers are resolved
