Hey everyone!
Hey, I am new here, just created this account, but don't know where to start. I'm new to this whole Fediverse thing. This doesn't look like Reddit, although i am aware that the main instance of Lemmy has an interface that looks similar to old Reddit. Yeah, that's it. Just wanted to drop by and say hello. If you have any suggestions about using this site, I’d be happy to know.

Your home piefed.zip has that theme too actually https://old.piefed.zip/
Although that theme probably doesn't support all of the features, it should mostly work
Awesome, much better that way.
it is pretty cool, but if something isn't working don't hesitate to check the regular theme. Also you should get a mobile app. Are you on Android or iPhone?

On Android and it seems there are many choices, right? which one do you think is fast and minimal with good simple interface?
I use Blorp. One of the original ones designed to be compatible with PieFed. Fast and customizable. And the developer will often even pop up to help troubleshoot it, if necessary...
I've been using Boost but it has ads. I'm primarily a Lemmy user though, so I haven't tested Boost with PieFed much. Summit is also good and no ads, that would probably be my suggestion to try first. https://summit.idunnololz.com/
I have been viewing fine on browser for years. It works good if you don’t wanna have to choose or use an app.
Welcome! What are you interested in? I'll give you some good starting communities to subscribe to:

Just open each one and click the Join button in the sidebar
Done, thanks! I am mostly interested in technology, world news, privacy, computer stuff, music, especially electronic and metal and perhaps a random sub or community to talk about anything, sort of like casual conversation or something like that.

![email protected]
maybe this is overly specific but ![email protected]
![email protected]
There's also a few good Linux communities like ![email protected] and self hosting ![email protected]
You can also check the Feeds and Topics, which group multiple communities together
https://piefed.zip/topics
(warning, big list) https://piefed.zip/feeds
![email protected] seems to be a popular community for casual conversation.
Feeds can also be useful to get started, such as ~[email protected]. Basically they are user-generated combinations of communities related to the same thematic. Some other feeds you might be interested in are ~[email protected], ~[email protected], and ~[email protected].
World news and computer stuff is usually easy to find here, with people more commonly wondering how to avoid it than how to find it.
You might like ![email protected].
Not that I’m biased or anything. 😇Greetings, traveler!
Some slightly more technical tips if you don't mind:
If you can't find a community in your instance, it may simply have not propagated yet. In such possibility, you may want to look it up using http://catalog.catodon.rocks/ or https://lemmyverse.net/, and then use Piefed's dedicated community finding search (can't remember the path nor check now, sorry) with the community handle (community@instance, like here which is [email protected]).
If Piefed now allows it, you may also want to follow hashtags. Helps filling some niches not filled by communities.
If someone's not on the fediverse, or bridged through @[email protected], but are on platforms with RSS, you can follow them with @[email protected] or (if your instance's sufficiently up to date) by making a community and adding their RSS feeds to the RSS tab of the community's dashboard.
Also, I second the comment by @[email protected], that you should use the block features as you see needed, so you can better curate your feeds.
Thanks!

Huzzah! Always good to have more folks. Welcome to the Fediverse. I'm also a former Redditor.
Lessee. Some info that might be useful to a former Redditor:
That's probably enough for now. Just things I learned since coming here. Again, we're glad to have you!
Thanks! I do remember the whole API thing. I deleted my main account at that time and went to become a lurker and was looking for alternatives although i knew about lemmy, i still, even to this day, find the whole fediverse difficult to grasp and a bit hard to understand. For example, right now, on my home screen i still see things that i didn't subscribe to like memes and such, unlike on old reddit where i only see the things i subscribed to. Another thing just happened where i clicked join on a metal community, right now i see i subscribed to a bunch of instances.
Anyway, with time, i am pretty sure I'll get used to it.
I don't mind different political opinions as long as they don't force and ban on a slight offense or something they don't like. Same as AI as long as it's labeled as such or the OP states.
I'm really dumb about understanding jokes so i have no idea what you're talking about, however i do like beans, that's for sure :D
On the last point...
My personal philosophy is to peruse all and block any communities you are 100% uninterested in or are unworkable (so for me its memes, sports, and non english). Block users who you would not want to hang with in real life or otherwise do things that make your experience not the way you would like it. I compare it to an mmo chat. A few blocks really improves the experience. piefed has keyword blocking if there is something that becomes popular that you just don't care to fill up your feed. Think in terms of not wanting to miss what you want to see for it being buried in what you are seeing.
Will do, thanks.
Welcome! I hope you'll like it here.
Thank you.
If you have iOS, download Voyager, or you can go to https://wefwef.app/ in a web browser. Pull up the Communities sidebar, then click the 3 dots in the top right corner and you’ll see a Starter Pack option. That will get you subbed to some good communities off the bat.
Thanks, but i don't have iOS, i am on android. So far the web site seems okay to use on phone for now at least, and later i might try one of the apps for android mentioned above.
Actually Voyager is also available on Android as well. I didn’t know this, but it is. Personally I was a big fan of Apollo (the discontinued Reddit app for iOS) so the fork and continuation of it with Lemmy I was all for. Glad it’s available on Android now too.
I believe Boost is the other big forked app from Reddit that is pretty popular as well.
I messed around with a bunch of them and stuck with Voyager for a while before switching to Mlem (an iOS only app) because of how well it integrates into iOS with appearances and design, and also because the devs are super responsive and have a matrix chat they’re very active in.
I still keep Voyager installed tho because it’s got some really useful features I occasionally use
