Netflix: James Bond?

Me: Yes!

Netflix: We don't have it!

From a UX perspective, would you prefer the site pretends they never heard of James Bond, rahter than confirming it's existence and (un)availability?
I don't use Netflix, so I apologise if the UI is actually intentionally misleading, but that otherwise sounds like good UX.

I'm not sure. I think I'd prefer if it did something like:

James Bond (not available on Netflix)

That way I wouldn't have to click through to see whether it's on there.

I guess the status quo feels shitty to me because aside from dealing with the disappointment of not having the content I want, they will also try and vie for my time with content they think is similar to what I was looking for.

Yeah that sounds best, save unnecessary click/confirm but still acknowledge the query.

I doubt Netflix wants to show:
Search: A
AB (unavailable)
ABC (unavailable)
ABCD (unavailable)
So probably a gray/dark pattern...

i think it good to be able to confirm uts not available and you didnt just misspeel it

Better that then “Avenge-? Yeah man I don’t know what you’re on about.”

This was honestly my final straw.

Cause they don’t just tell you they don’t have it, they just try to give you something similar.

It’s literally the “can we have ___? We have ___ at home” meme

Hard to find Japanese subs for a lot of western media, and netflx subs all their stuff. There just isn't a ton of piracy compared to western countries.

Try nintendo store search.

Pointless to even expect it to autofill popular games. Autofills totally random words.

That one is the fault of every media company wanting to have their own streaming platform.

SEO

If you search “watch XYZ online” Google will still link to Netflix even if they don’t carry it.

80% of the time when you ask “why is there content I don’t want” the answer is SEO.

It means they have it, just not in your country

I've never checked if it also includes things they've had before but currently lack the rights for

Not necessarily. I think they still use a lot of titles as tags to try and get you a “if you like x, then you should watch y.”

36

I feel like they only help you spell the ones they don't have. Not that I've been on Netflix in years
