Im not old enough to remember whatever he did during people's republic times, but to my generation he was that one funny grandpa that mocked the church (among other things) and around the time I learned of him 'cenzopapa' became internet-mainstream, that's also a whole thing (cenzopapa being a meme based on mocking the polish pope)
