Why do people pre-order digital download-only games again?

85

Exclusive content and more commonly recently, early access.

If you’re going to buy it anyway, why not line it up and get it good to go when its released? People are clearly happy to give it a go based on the studio’s previous titles.

I do not care for GTA or Rockstar, and don't see myself ever touching any of their games, but I believe everything we know about games goes out of the window in this scenario.

GTA6 is evidently a cultural event, and many will want to be there minute one whether they regularly play video games or not.

6

In the extremely unlikely event that it'll run on my steam deck - or its eventual successor - I'll probably play it in a few years when it's on sale. But there's so much good stuff out there already that I'm in no rush.

Why it's a digital game.

Are people worried they're going to run out of downloads?

If I don't pre-order the game I can still get it day one if I want to. It's not even as if the deluxe edition has to be pre-ordered, you can just get that the day releases well.

There's no reason to pre-order.

12

It downloads itself and is playable sooner. That’s the reason. Is it a good one? No. But it’s a reason.

8

I’m surprised you can’t pre download encrypted parts to ease the download time on launch.

Nah, fuck Rockstar. Never buy one of their games again.

42

I remember back when 3DM started stripping away Rockstar's DRM on GTA V back in 2015. That was in crazy demand in pirating circles

1

Yeah I'll just wait for the inevitable PC recompilation + multiplayer, and then enjoy GTA Online for free. (And then pirate the PC version when it comes up as a double fuck you to Rockstar.)

I don't see how a game can live up to all this hype.

Doesn't have to. Already made bank. People are preordering a game which they could just wait a day and download on day one.

42

Be funny if it does a cyberpunk and all the pre order ppl have to wait months for patches. Doesn't seem likely tho, ho hum.

How can it not? For most people, it will be a newer and better GTA 5. And that's all it needs to be. From the looks of it, it seems to even surpass that expectation. Maybe lot of people will be disappointed in the beginning, but only because they don't know the entire game yet. If this does not turn out to be a Cyberpunk 2077, then based on Rockstars track record, we can expect them to deliver.

Even cyberpunk was eventually good supposedly. I was excited about it but skipped it due to the launch issues and just never got around to actually getting it.

At launch it was good too. For me. There was no shortage of video evidence of the game going haywire for other folks, but it worked quite well for me. I don't know what I did differently other than playing on PC. Its bones were good from the start.

12

The PC was the best version. Not every hardware and software was as much buggy, and maybe you just didn't do out of the box stuff that would trigger more issues. Just guessing here. It was mostly a catastrophe on the last gen consoles (PS4 and XBOne).

7

Same experience for me on PC. Seeing all the talk about people's negative experiences of it at that time was strange and unfortunate when I had only experienced two or three game-crashing bugs that were easily avoided once I found them. I wish or hope that more people had similar experiences to ours and just maybe weren't as vocal or something. I really enjoyed that game then and still do from time to time

3

I recently started playing it and I can only recommend it. No bugs or anything on my Ubuntu gaming machine.

The atmosphere is great, the story is fun. The open world could be better (definitely no GTA) and I still haven't figured out how to install weapon mods being several hours in the game.

I would never recommend preordering games and since I'm not playing multiplayer games anymore I don't really care about when I get to play a game. I started playing the Outcast remaster via GOG for example because of nostalgia and because I never completed it when I first got it decades ago.

But: apparently they fixed Cyberpunk and it got recommended for me, so it was worth it on a discount.

I'm waiting for a few days after release, to check what the real plyers say. Still - if it's at gta v level without too many bugs, i will buy. Yeah and I'm aware, I'm just renting it for the privilege of playing it this year.

If I find another fun game, I might also wait.

If I want to play it in the future and lose access - I'll set sail on the high seas.

Say what you will about Rockstar and their shitty, worker-exploiting, union-busting practices, but their last two new games, GTA5 and RDR2, were some of my favorite games of all time.

I can’t imagine the game being anything other than phenomenal.

(Doesn’t mean I’m going to buy it for either my Xbox or my PlayStation.)

I’ll say that at one time, you supported their shitty worker-exploiting, union busting practices. And so does everyone that buys this game.

1
piefed.social

Yep. I sure did. I’m not proud of it. I’m also not going to pretend that I’ve been ideologically perfect or something.

The previews and leaks have looked pretty stunning. I'm not buying in at full price, or on PS5, but I do think it looks incredible.

Well With the decomp / recomp [LLM] train that hit this month, it’ll be ported to pc within days

Guarantee there are teams lining up for that right now.

2

Not really interested in putting an LLM decomp project on my PC.

I've just restarted playing GTA 5 singleplayer again and it's honestly unmatched. No other game comes close to their level and it was released in 2013. The hype is justified.

This is why gamers will own nothing and love it.

It's just children eating marshmallows.

Being mildly uncomfortable and skipping the new hotness is just unthinkable for a lot of people.

24
piefed.ca

I wonder how many of them stood in opposition to Rockstar’s union busting. Typical talk shit, but don’t do shit mentality.

14

I think Playstation has always attracted the most basic of gamers, and that, of that 76%, about 76% are completely unaware of Sony's position on physical gaming. And that's probably a conservative estimate.

The more telling number is the average: $594M over 6M preorders is about $99 each, well above a standard edition price, so a big share must be premium editions. Worth keeping in mind it's a Sensor Tower estimate rather than Rockstar's own figure, so I'd treat the exact 74% PlayStation split with some caution.

12
lemmy.world

I mean Rockstar CEO, Strauss Zelnick, a few months ago was literally quoted bragging about how the deluxe version was outselling the standard version since they removed the full game from the standard version.

7
Nzoreply

That would explain the ~$99 average pretty neatly. Small nitpick: Zelnick is Take-Two’s CEO rather than Rockstar’s, though since Take-Two sets the pricing it amounts to the same thing.

I am shocked, and apalled! /s

Yeah, even if some of our current generation(s) manage to own anything, good chance we're the last.
