Does your instance federate with Hexbear and Lemmygrad? Because I constantly have those people in my feed and it's absolutely exhausting. I see more memes about burning the rich and starting a revolution than normal memes in my feed. I'm left-wing, but I'm not looking at memes to constantly be confronted with politics. Unfortunately instance blocking isn't working well for me yet
Waah...I don't want to press the downvote button, id rather whine about all the things I don't like. People should automatically anticipate my desires and cater to them.... Waaahh
If there are two or more people, there are politics. I agree with the idea that people who decry ‘politics’ often have disgusting ideas and beliefs. Its a malignant form of privilege to pretend to be able to ignore politics. It’s either that or they are just a little dim and don’t feel they can keep up in a conversation.
So? I didn't do that in an attempt to start a discussion about politics, but to illustrate that that is exactly what other people do - in places where it is completely uncalled for.
It's when people start screaming/blaming the "left" or "right", the "biden" or "trump", etc.
Extra annoying when I am not even fucking American and have to hear Americans scream about your old senile corpses you call presidents in EVERY FUCKING POST.
Extra extra annoying when I am reading a news article about my country, and Americans roll in screaming about how that's "bidens fault" or "illegal in montana". Learn to fucking read where you are.
I think it's the world that's been taken over, not by politics, but by a series of rich bastards not being held accountable for the crimes against society they're regularly committing.
But either way I'd be MUCH happier to wish for all the porn to be removed from my feed when I dont even follow a single porn based sub. Or at the very least make sure it's blurred.
Seriously. I'm suspicious and tired of people who can find a way to complain about Trump and Republicans or Biden and alleged Socialism in literally every single topic, no matter how unrelated it may be. I just want to laugh every once in a while.
To be honest, due to how this thread turned out, I’m not even able to distinguish if this is serious or sarcasm
Just to clarify, my general point, I am in no way against discussing politics. Be it in the political communities, or with the occasional meme. I fully realize the potential that memes have for initiating or reflecting on political discussion.
My point here is that I have a strong feeling that the comment section of seemingly non-divisive posts I’ve also fallen prey to the BuT eVeRyThInG iS PoLiTiCs hardliners. I fully realize that many, many topics can be seen as politically divisive, even if I don’t feel so myself. But I would like to make two points about this:
And some posts, I get the feeling that the political discussion has absolutely nothing to do with the post body itself. It could be a picture of a beautiful sunrise, and someone suddenly starts talking about some American politician, and about how if it was up to that politician, we would never have sunrises again or something.
Secondly, but very importantly: the level tends to be very low. People don’t know once we articulate their political opinion or reaction to another person’s political opinion, but it turns into this food fight-grade yes/no, strawman, whataboutism, etc. etc. It is my personal opinion that this takes away from most users lemmy experience, it does from mine anyway.
If people actually upvoted good content and downvoted bad content, the front page of every default sub on Reddit wouldn't be an endless sea of reposts.
I downvote whenever I see them, but it seems like there are more, or a loud few (maybe both), for every one of my downvotes. It's not just here, it seems like this on /all too. To be more specific, it seems there are more trolls constantly watching and quicker on the keyboard for anything remotely political. It sucks that we need moderation in any capacity to enforce no politics on 'no politics' spaces..
With all the garbage, unrelated, and no-effort posts that get dumped in this community and then upvoted hundreds of times, it's hilarious that political memes, which are actually memes, are where people draw the line.
Just to clarify, my meme was more about Lemmy in general, also not the posts themselves but that the comment sections of all kind of things suddenly become (in my view unnecessarily) politically divisive. It just escalates quickly.
Literally seen more whining about politics than I've seen politics.
Well... technically speaking: Isn't "whining about politics" still "politics"?
If we follow that rabbit hole, OP has contributed to the exact issue they are ranting about.

Hi, you can take action by blocking the most prolific communities - there aren't that many in either instance that are high volume.
There are also instances that don't federate with either.
Alas, yes it does, but idk, stop looking at shit memes.
Oh I wish to stop looking at shit memes, but if more than half of them are tankie crap it's obviously going to degrade the experience
You need a better meme plug. I'd share my sources, but I don't want them to get too popular, yaknow?
You wouldn't know them, they go to another instance
Your instance doesn't affect what you see, except in cases of de-federation.
Same. OP is no 2 for my blocklist of literal children crying about politics.
Waah...I don't want to press the downvote button, id rather whine about all the things I don't like. People should automatically anticipate my desires and cater to them.... Waaahh
Do you read the comments too, or just scroll through the feed?
I do. And it doesn't phase me, just scroll on past, like that homeless man you ignore in the street.
I've seen a sudden influx of memes all about this and I don't know why. It's suddenly the new trend and I don't understand it.
Make your own instance with the politics you want.
There is no such thing as non-political spaces, only spaces where everyone has pre-agreed on what politics are acceptable.
There is no such thing as a non-political discussion either! ;) everything is politics in some sense
No, everything is math.
Math is life!
math is racist.
edit: /s for those of you who don't get the joke
Burn the math!
Average comment: "I'm glad to see more female engineers. Historically they have been disfranchised."
MFers like OP: "Why would you bring politics into this?"
There are only two genders: man and political!
I am wary of people using an unspecified "politics tho" like this. More than once the """PoLiTiCs""" they meant were LGBTQIA+ people simply existing.
Honestly I never got why LGBT+ is even a political thing. It’s just basic human rights. But probably my opinion will be seen as politics by some.
That was my point. It's NOT political. The right is just using their existence as a scape goat.
Everything is political. This is why human rights get attacked by politicians.

Talking about Trump on every other thread has nothing to do with politics either, I assume?
You are the one who just brought up that orange fuck lol
So? I didn't do that in an attempt to start a discussion about politics, but to illustrate that that is exactly what other people do - in places where it is completely uncalled for.
I wish people would stop using "politics" as a buzzword for every bit of news they don't care to hear about.
News is fine.
It's when people start screaming/blaming the "left" or "right", the "biden" or "trump", etc.

But then again, According to a 2020 report by the U.S. Department of Education, 54% of adults in the United States have English prose literacy below the 6th-grade level.
How does this compare to other western countries?
As an American, I couldn't resist.
I havent seen anyone talk about politics on programming.dev
Thank you, we'll get right on it.
That's right.
But only because "Vim vs Emacs" is a technically a religious holy war.
Nothing but holy wars there.
I block a lot of folks. It's nice.

Genie: so there are 5 rules
Seems to me lemmy needs a bigger downvote button
Well lemmy has a left lean and it's currently small enough for it to spill into other communities.
I lean to the left myself. But it’s just nice to have a break every once in a while.
Seriously. I'm suspicious and tired of people who can find a way to complain about Trump and Republicans or Biden and alleged Socialism in literally every single topic, no matter how unrelated it may be. I just want to laugh every once in a while.
Exactly! But everytime someone says this out come the but everything is politics warriors.
this is EXACTLY what the OTHER PARTY would say!!!

im being sarcastic.
Not seen this yet, tbh. Politics in fact seem a rather rare topic outside of the US-centric posts?
if people were to actually downvote politics that would help
If people actually upvoted good content and downvoted bad content, the front page of every default sub on Reddit wouldn't be an endless sea of reposts.

Theres a block function in a lot of Lemmy apps.
I meant taken over, but can’t change it now on mobile
It's okay. We get it. But I see you've been scarred by those I mentioned in my other comment.
You know they're still gonna come for you, though...
sniff sniff "Hark! Doth he hear a chance to feel better about thyself?" cracks knuckles
Thanks saltesc :)
Preach.

And the Actually Guys.
finishes comment: That is a nice picture of a tree. Well done.
"There. Surely no one can possibly start dissecting it, straw manning it, or start arguing."
An hour later, there's three monumentally off-track replies raising points and arguing things no one fucking mentioned or ask for.
Well ackhually this is a photograph, not a picture... ramble ramble, argument bait
Akchually, that's a shrub because... ramble ramble, argument bait
Akchually, you're wrong. It would've been "nice" if... ramble ramble, argument bait
NO ONE...FUCKING...CARES. FUCK OFF.
Actually, you're displaying an aggressively incurious attitude, which is not the virtue you seem to think it is 😛
