Autistic Communication and Identity through Internet Memes

I half jokingly googled autistic meme communication so that I could make a meme to share with my fellow autists at work about how they should just let us communicate via memes, but this is better than I could have ever imagined 😅

The dataset was categorised into eight topics: Social Interactions (n = 190), Emotions and Mental Health (n = 68), Cognitive and Behavioural (n = 56), Sensory Experiences (n = 38), Diagnosis and Support (n = 34), Stereotypes (n = 19), Workplace (n = 15), and Love for Cats (n = 8).

I haven't read it yet but I would love to understand how memes, which are built on implied meaning, are so prevalent in autistic communication? Is it because of the shared experiences? Fascinating stuff!

The My Oversharing Autistic Ass internet meme (Figure 6) was submitted to the comment thread, in response to the Oversharing v Not Talking internet meme (Figure 7) discussed above. The visual signifiers show a character with his mouth slightly open and arms elevated, the connotation of which suggests he is pausing to catch his breath, implying a continuous flow of communication. His arms elevated as though he is trying to grab the listener’s attention and perhaps, invading the listener’s personal space. When looking at the textual overlay of "But wait, there’s more" compounds this feeling, as though the listener has tried to leave the conversation hence the character stating “But wait, there’s more”. The syntagmatic element of this internet meme is interesting as the image used in this internet meme is taken from an American teleshopping advertisement (Coma and Cavia, 2005). The use of a teleshopping advertisement in this meme is an interesting choice, as these commercials are commonly associated with aggressive sales tactics. These tactics are characterised by their fast-paced, overwhelming nature, where viewers are bombarded with information by fast-talking salespeople who aim to close sales quickly without giving them a change to reflect on their potential purchase (Potter, 1983). In this context, oversharing is symbolically depicted in this internet meme as a type of verbal salesmanship; one that bombards with information without leaving room for the audience to respond.

I love us, lol.

Personally, I use memes to convey thoughts/emotions that can be hard to express verbally (or written down).
