Phhht. Curating my own feed baby. I block people, subs, sites. Whatever it takes.

Yep, I have about a dozen each for blocked communities, blocked users, blocked instances.

Life is too short to deal with annoyance you don’t have to. Block liberally.

You know that saying; your not stuck in traffic, you are traffic.

We live in a society, if you want it to be a better place you have to engage with others.

There's some truth in that, but Lemmy is not society for me. I come here for memes, comics, other funny stuff and once a week I'll discuss what books I'm currently reading. I don't want to read about politics here, and I don't want to interact with assholes.

We live in a society, if you want it to be a better place you have to engage with others.

Not without boundaries. It's amazing to be able to interact with people from all over the world, but not all interactions are useful or genuine.

I don't have issues with people blocking me or the communities I am active in. I found the whole tesseract thing shady because it wasn't transparent, but I don't think some great harm has occurred because people can't see me yap.

I routinely block communities that aren't interesting to me, so that browsing All is easier. I also block comms or people that make me compelled to argue (vs discuss). For example, if I am feeling compelled to defend myself to someone who is putting words in my mouth instead of asking me what I meant then I think the wise thing for me to do is probably just block and move on. They aren't interested in understanding me and I'm just wasting energy. I don't always achieve this, but it's certainly healthier than trying to dissect where the interaction went wrong and getting angry at a stranger. They can fuck up and make assumptions just as well as I can. They don't need my anger in their life.

It's draining enough to work on effective communication IRL. I'm not going to be able to do that for the whole world.

I'm not gonna clock in for a shift online educating bigots that won't change their mind. Blocking gets them off my feed. If someone doesn't want to be blocked, they should treat others with respect and dignity and not support fascism.

21

I agree. I didn't leave the algorithmic echo chamber simply to change the colour of it to my own taste. I say block conservatively personally, I don't even block the Putin apologist contingent because it's important to know your opposition directly in my view.

I only block spammers and that's because of their actions not their opinions.

4

, if you want it to be a better place you have to engage with others.

I'll just buy a news channel.

3

I think this is my approach also. But I can also understand not everyone wants the same things from their time here that I do :)

Only people I've blocked are the weird hybrid bot reddit reposters who spam shit and regularly post gross sexist shit.

I wish they'd just leave but any time you critisize them they just get mad and call you a "reddit agent" 😅

driving on the other side of the road

"pssh, there's hardly any traffic over here, and the ones here get out of my way and cheer me on with honks and flashing their lights."

See, I'm engaging with others! :D

2

I happily engage with others, sometimes through flashes of annoyance. But as soon as I find myself deleting the text in the comment box because it’s not worth it, I just block to prevent myself from being baited. And it works well for my mental health and overall experience of the platform.

i find it funny that just ignoring someone means the other person can post unchallenged

genuine engagement takes effort, but we all know that's not what lemmy was really about despite what people claim

Tesseract was a fairly well-made Lemmy front-end, except it silently blocked about a thousand people that the creator thought were toxic, including me.

God forbid I wanna watch a guillotine bounce off the rich.

I try to only block the spammy kind, not the ones that I simply disagree with.

sh.itjust.works

It depends on the "disagreement". If you say you like pineapple on pizza, I'll forgive your sin against the gods. If you say something transphobic, I'm blocking and reporting

17

Why block? You can’t report them every time you see them then! I only block spam accounts that don’t get removed after like a month of reporting, it’s impossible to keep an eye on transphobes or nazis if you block them.

I think it's okay that people block each other for petty things. Only don't be surprised if you're sitting in a room by yourself one day. People do this everyday socially. Let's pretend that nothing in the last few months didn't happen and why is this happening?

12

Yep. Every person has a different tolerance and it’s okay for them to draw their own boundaries.

I do think it’s weird when people feel the need to announce it though.

9

I block chronic reposters. When I see the same post 5 times a look at the posters profile and if it's the same post for pages I block them. I don't usually block the assholes because it's important to see what bullshit they're spewing.

8

I block all those weird thirsty accounts that always reach the front page. If I wanna spank the monkey, I'll decide it on my own time and have way better places to do it.

Hiding from propaganda does nothing to combat it ¯\(ツ)/¯

It does, some styles of rhetoric basically require a context of contentious argument, especially if they revolve around mockery/bullying and contempt for reasoned debate, so depriving them of your actual and apparent attention is the best you can do because it leaves them without anything to work with.

16

Exactly. They aren't interested in actual discussion, just trolling. Depriving them of the audience for which to do so is the only practical solution.

12

Tbh i block many people just because they only post like anime memes/comics and stuffs that into communities that i'd otherwise want to follow. Why not? Its not like they will be sad that randomuser#1341576915 blocked them, and it's nothing against them, just the content they make is annoying or inapproperiate to me and this place is all about that. I'm pretty sure they'd rather have this than other people going into their comments and insult or be rude to them for absolutely no reason, that's just dick move. Someone may block me after reading my comment just because i don't like anime stuffs, and why not? If they think my personality can annoy them in the future while seeing nothing relevant in me, why would they not be allowed to simply choose to not get any of my thoughts at all.

4

People become drunk on power, I smite thee. In your attack on me you attack the world and this I cannot have.

3

My previous instance blocked lemmy.world and other big instances. Why? I had to migrate because 2/3 of my subscribed communities were gone

3

Some anti spam meassures are not as good here as on major sites.

I generally like the openness so it doesn't bother me I sometimes need to take matter into my own hands and block, but if my timeline is full of one idiot posting the same unfitting spamm in ALL communities, they get blocked fast. That's what the button is for.

3

Lemmings are proud of their little echo chambers and love to announce it to the world when they blocked someone. That's why we get insanely violent and hateful takes so regularly here. Many here often whine about popular social media, but this place is in some respects far worse. I'd say 10% are full-on psychopaths.

2

I somehow have zero people blocked so far. But over on Reddit? I had a list of over a thousand people. Lemmy in general is way more civil than Reddit has become.

Blocking, edits, and downvotes are signs of weakness. An honorable poster exposes themselves to all takes while incessantly spewing their own

That being said I'd block the reddit repost llm guy if he'd stick with one account long enough for it to make a difference lol

1

I agreed with you before having an argument with lemmy.ml users , I triggered troll or annoying account and honestly I blocked them because I didnt want to argur with peoples who clearly dont want to debate

piefed.world

Yeah? So? I mean, I don’t want to read the stupid shite of people who get angry when I use the word “cocksucker” in a negative way.

Because it’s either that or leaving the Fediverse for good. Most times I read more sensible stuff on fucking TikTok instead of here. Not gonna expose myself to this pretentiousness.

TBH its both but more so the normalization of echo chambers. Conflict and discourse builds and changes people, avoidance does not.

2

Civil “conflict and discord builds and changes people”, which often times people online forget the civil part.
