I've been on one of these buses. You sit there in the bus, waiting for it to fill up enough to leave. It's hot like a sauna. Everyone is dehydrated (so you don't stop to pee) and miserable. Then some asshat with energy like a reincarnated Richard Simmons jumps on the bus and has music going and shouts at you, or maybe even has a fucking portable PA system, inside a literal tin can on wheels. It lasts forever. No one reacts. No one's into it. No one wants this. Ever. Then the preacher, who is likely just some asshat doing this to scam a few cedis, prays that you won't die on the road. Which is a real threat. So people throw him a little something and he moves on.

Thank the gods above and below, that this will not plague another generation.

I am a reasonable man and am certain that the holy book, the bible is an absolute heap of disgusting, slavery condoning, male infant genital mutilation demanding, repellent, demented, vicious dark age mumbo jumbo. Christians should be told quite clearly that our citizens have the legal right to criticise, lampoon, ridicule and mock god and Jesus to their heart's content, in any way that they wish: that Christians have no special claim to protection from the rough and tumble of post-Enlightenment intellectual, political and social life. If they cannot live in a society in which this is the case, they should go somewhere else; they are, after all, spoilt for choice, at least in theory.

Damn, I have never seen someone preaching in a public transport. Most I have seen is asking for donation for religious organizations. I have seen preaching being done on campuses and I used to do some preaching on my campus for a year (from a different religious background btw).

Good. That's a captive audience. Fuck people who do this. Same as when a dance group plays loud music on a train I can't exit while performing a routine.

49

I've had that happen in Rome and Barcelona. The sing and dance was invariably followed by a tipping phase where they sent ten year olds around to pass the hat while also trying to pick my pocket.

This kinda shit happens all the time in major cities like NYC, Boston, DC, etc.

In some African countries, fundie preachers -- styled after American tent revivalists -- are almost everywhere to the point of omnipresent as evidenced by the large number of banners for local pastors running their own tentpole ministries. Their influence is so enormous that they even warp government policies, as in the case of Uganda and entrenched anti-homosexuality panics.

So this is a change. Like people should have the right to have peaceful uninterrupted conveyance.

50

Same with Ghana. They've had a Nazi-style anti-LGBTQI bill they've been kicking around for years, likely brought directly to them by fundie US preachers. They once buried a skate park because it "was bringing the gays to children." Seriously.

its deeper than that, american christian evangelical groups have been going to african countries pushing evangelical legislations to the countries in africa, hence where there are so many anti-lgbtq+ legislations.

15

Yeah, for those groups Africa is their test lab for which to create their own armies for the supposed upcoming endtimes.

8

You see that across levels of development. There are giant glowing banners in Johannesburg that are rather distracting when driving at night. Not sure how many thousands are in those megachurches.

No living creature should be forced to hear religion yelled at them in public areas simply because they can't leave the area.

No person should be forced to listen to religious crap in public, period.

If you cannot be religious without the urge to tell others, then it's just performative wanking.

And we all know how acceptable public masturbation is.

I'd be the first one to warn them that MY religion requires me to shit in their mouf. And probably the first to be murdered on a bus for poopin into an assholes mouf.

Yeah they need to make this a rule everywhere, and especially on flights.

11

Even if it's not a rule, people like me are sometimes around to whisper even crazier shit into their ear from behind.

Preaching on commercial buses was first prohibited in Ghana in 2012, with offenders facing up to 30 days in prison.

But enforcement was weak and so the practice remained common, particularly on buses. The new law beefs up the penalties for those that flout the ban.

Makes sense why BBC News changed the title; that's fairly misleading.

Preaching religion in public should be treated the same as any other insane threatening rambling and be an arrestable offense

Just because I don't believe in God doesn't make me an authoritarian. You're just as much of a threat to my freedom as any Christian nationalist.

You went from reasonable to absurd right at the end there.

Christian nationalist want to take away my freedom of worship.

You want to take away my freedom of speech.

You're right though, I did misspeak. I use my freedom of speech more, so you're actually a bigger threat.

You think Christian nationalists won't take your freedom of speech? Whew boy.

1

Never said that, you're just making up an argument to disagree with. I am certain that the person I'm arguing with doesn't like free speech, because they're talking about what kind of speech they want to criminalize. Do you agree with them, or do you like free speech?

-1

Okay well first of all I don't want to take anything from you so that's just the stupid place to hang your hat on.

But if you think all that Christian nationalists want from you is your freedom of worship you're an idiot. Christian nationalists want to take way more than just religion from you. They would impose their most violent extreme version of religion upon you. If you think Christian nationalists have anything for you other than extreme oppression then you are nuts.

I heard American airplanes need a law or two like this one.

7

Seriously, you can punch someone on a bus (its frowned upon) but punch someone on an airplane and your going to have a bad time.

2

Oh, that there have been a law banning parents from holding children hostage for religious indoctrination when I was a child!

Dude, it’s the white mans religion. It’s been used to fuck over every damn culture that’s ever encountered it. Of all people, you should veering away from it rather sharply.

Meh. I tend to think that Christianity, with all its flaws, is better than the pre-Christian religion in Fiji.

So formal human sacrifices were frequent. Prisoners of war or slain enemies were often offered. The sacrificial victims too were sometimes taken from a distant tribe and when war and  violence failed to supply the demand, some- times the human lambs had to be negotiated.  Regardless of the way the human sacrifice  was obtained, the victim was often fed and fattened to make him fl eshier.  “Then tightly bound…they were placed on  hot stones in one of the usual ovens and being covered over with leaves and earth were  roasted alive while the spectators roared with laughter…”
