Thank You for Stopping!
From Umoya Khulula Wildlife Centre
This beautiful Barn Owl was sadly hit by a car and found lying injured on the side of the road.
Thankfully, a kind-hearted member of the public stopped to help. Instead of driving past, they took the time to carefully pick him up and get him to a vet.
On examination, it was clear that his wing was badly broken and would require surgery. A pin was placed to stabilise the fracture and give his wing the best possible chance of healing properly.
Thankfully, his surgery was successful, and he is now safely in our care where he can rest, recover and receive the rehabilitation he needs.
Never underestimate the difference one person can make.
If you find an injured wild animal, please don't drive past. Stop, get help and give them a chance. Thank you Wolkberg Vet for the treatment and care.

Oof on surgery in such a small animal. Sounds like a good team rooting for the little guy's recovery!
Some bird bone breaks can be really nasty, as their bones can shatter more than the typical clean breaks out bones tend to get.
Since bird bones are too delicate for screws and plates like we'd get, long pins get inserted through the bones lengthwise, and locating pins will hold that in place. The part you see in the photo on the outside of the wing is the fixator holding those locating pins in place.
Once the bone is healed, the pins can all be pulled out without further surgery.
Here's a before/after of a pelican wing break.
