My friendship ended with Reddit. Now Lemmy is my friend. 🫂

Until a comment you makes pisses off a power tripping mod and then you are permabanned from like 16 communities.

Shits infected here too.

33
sh.itjust.works

All the communities with power tripping mods here are either minor or have significant viable alternatives.

mesareply
piefed.social

Heck you can make your own instance (as others have) and do what you want!

35

You mean there are more options then posting cringe feudposts daily begging your instances admins to defederate from instances instead of blocking them yourself?

4

It is true. Did you even try?

Edit: why are you talking about being banned from 16 communities when the modlog only shows two bans? You wouldn't be ban evading, would you?

I mean, you should have definitely been banned from the Seattle community for saying that Washington state deserved what was coming to it with ICE because they implemented gun control after mass shootings, but that didn't happen to this account.

31

Luckily, Lemmy is a place, where you can communicate with the actual human beings.

18

To everyone reading, you can check this person's moderation history. Check out mine to, love that page!

6

That's a feature. every instance gets to set and enforce their own rules. The users get to decide which communities (and their attendant rules and admins) they participate in. Humans don't suddenly become more immune to the follies of power, but power is more distributed and (so far) are less likely to be captured by monied interests.

If you're waiting for humans to suddenly stop falling for the temptation to abuse of power, I think you'll be waiting a while. I think it's a significant improvement on the centralized corporate model.

1

Never underestimate just how corrupting it is giving marginalized people any semblance of power.

They are basically taking out their frustrations on the family cat except we're the cat.

We know RSS has been a beloved part of the open web for a long time, and we're grateful to everyone who used it to stay connected to Reddit,

It’s like they aren’t even listening to the words they are saying themselves

AmyAyereply
nord.pub

Oh God they are dumping RSS too? Fucking hell that's the only way I even use that platform anymore since it means getting a handful of news updates on some games without going there.

44

Yeah, last nail in the coffin for me. Fucked if I'm gonna wade through more than titles to sort through the bullshit. Maybe RSS-Bridge can save us, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Wonder how bad their real user numbers will tank.

Man I know I'm the minority here, but once I see a paywall, age verification, or logon block, I just move on with my life. It's not that important... Or there are other sources.

I don't think you're in the minority here

The day they blocked my old.reddit is the day I came over here. It honestly was easier than I thought, there are only a handful of communities I really miss, and those were all getting filled with AI bots anyways. It's emptier here, but at least I'm talking to actual people.

27

I came over well before that but I'd still land on the odd link from search or something. Then it asked me to sign in and now I ingore reddit links 🤷

9
lemmy.world

I have to say, this war on Old Reddit is doing wonders to curb my Reddit use.

92

It's actually amazing how quickly it killed my usage of the site. I deleted my account years ago but still lurked every now and then. Now I literally can't go back, I won't download the app and the new site layout is pretty much unusable for me.

33
HerbGrowerreply
slrpnk.net

I stopped commenting years ago. Old reddit changes stopped me browsing too.

35

I used Stealth for a while, and it was awesome, but it would go in and out, and a few months ago it just stopped working completely.

6

Also the "you must use the app!!!!" banner that appears after 30 seconds is fantastic on mobile, as they are actively preventing me to continue reading and doomscroll.

It's like "no! Bad dog! You already got your info. Now close your tab and go back to Lemmy"

17
zd9reply
lemmy.world

Reddit is fantastic for certain niche communities. On the whole, it fucking sucks, but it does contain so much helpful info because it just brings people together over a specific topic.

110
lemmy.world

There is literally nowhere else I can go for live game threads for sports as good as reddit.

37

I dunno, being in a reddit thread for a big game isn't really much of a discussion. It's just flowing text like Twitch chat. Exciting maybe, but I don't think it's all that valuable.

6

It's not an improvement at all, Discord is actively terrible for any community bigger than about two dozen people and I hate that it has taken the place of traditional forums.

18
Glowstickreply
lemmy.world

There are so many of those. Literally just search the term sports forum, and there are millions of them that have extremely active threads for all games

-4
AgentSevenreply
lemmy.zip

Because realistically I can only scroll on Fedi for maybe 20-30 minutes in a day before I've seen everything and if I have more time to kill, Reddit is there. Although I don't comment there at all anymore, it's truly worthless for conversation.

25

Why not try Duolingo or something? Or a crossword? The NYT app lets you play some games for free.

6

And the alternative to Lemmy is what? Viewing the same content of fifteen years reposted by a bot every once in a while, and having your discussion subverted by bad faith actors and bots?

I definitely don't feel like using Reddit much anymore. Most of my time is spent in a particular programming subreddit to answer such fruitful questions as 'what is a function' next to master thesis-worthy posts, which is entertaining I guess.

Reddit said a long time ago there were no plans to change availability of the HTML version of the website, and I suppose now there are plans driven by unscrupulous shareholder interests.

The lion's share of people are still on that platform, and those should be slowly nudged away from that burning garbage heap. It would be both tragic and hilarious at the same time if the mention of Lemmy caused the platform to ban you instantly.

2

Because when Reddit fucks up those users will look for alternatives, like Lemmy.

In this case it's important to highlight that Lemmy has many different front ends and apps available. Lemmy can look however you'd like it to look.

13
kbin.earth

That change helped reduce scraping and automated abuse, but still allowed any logged-in account to access Old Reddit, including accounts with no prior Old Reddit use.

To close this gap, in the next few months, we'll further limit access for logged-in users to only those who have used Old Reddit in the last six months

How horrible, ANY logged-in account can just access old reddit?? That needs to be fixed asap, how dare new users just use old reddit when they have a perfectly good shreddit available to them. — Reddit admins apparently

Nice admission there. Didn't expect them to be this open about their true feelings on the matter.

73

Was there for about 15 years. Been gone for over a year and I'm not looking back.

This is the modern reality of capital capturing digital communities.

32
piefed.social

i don't buy this "continues to fight AI scraping" bullshit for a second. they literally ceased API access for regular users after they sold the rights to google to specifically scrape their site with AI.

27
lemmy.world

Nothing to see here folks, just reddit continuing to dig its own grave.

17

And now the oligarchs behind the big AI firms ingest pirated scientific papers at enormous scale to build their products, and they see fuck all consequences for it. It's quite plausible the very papers Swartz was hounded to his grave over ended up in the training data. Justice is a fucking rare thing.

4
piefed.social

"In the next few months, we'll further limit access for logged-in users to only those who have used Old Reddit in the last six months (which covers the vast majority of all Old Reddit users),"

really? you expect me to believe the majority of old reddit users are old reddit users?

45

Reddit is mostly ai bots, & bots, and maybe a few genuine users.

I had my 18yo account 0erma-banned by ai. Then, ai reviewed ai ... ... ai said ai was correct but would send it up for further review... ... by another ai. Who sent it to a human... ... and the human sent me an apology. "Sometimes, we get things wrong. Your account has now been fully re-instated. We are sorry." ... and then ai stepped in and overrode the humans mods.

HAL 9000 is not fiction.

Never got into new Reddit. It feels so charmless and soulless.

17
feddit.org

It's optimized for pictures and videos and ads. The old layout works better for text and links and it shows. Old Reddit was perfect for quickly checking a niche subreddit - just skim the 20 or 30 headlines, open interesting links in a new tab or check some comments and you are informed about what is currently happening in that niche. Maybe you also read some text posts with questions. New Reddit is optimized to keep you scrolling and to put an endless stream of ragebait in your face.

10

just skim the 20 or 30 headlines, open interesting links in a new tab or check some comments and you are informed about what is currently happening in that niche

I think this is a big part of why they're trying to kill it. They want to trap you in an endless doom scroll. They don't want you to be able to quickly see there's nothing new and get out. Everything you look at needs to be another attempt to ensnare you and shove ads in your face.

Yeah you know it's bad when you start to use Google to search for stuff on Reddit because it's better at doing it than Reddit's own search.

13
sh.itjust.works

TBF, Google search was better at searching most sites than any search function those sites had. Up until a few years ago anyway.

13

i think people meant search engine using reddit when you are asking a question on google in the search bar.

2
sh.itjust.works

yep. Forums used to be a thing but they have faded a long while ago for things like reddit and discord. Real websites are usually garbage designed to trip search engine results and now it's a ton of AI slop too.

So people started including reddit in their search to get the info they wanted. And now reddit has noticed and is leaning into that

14

I mean this is just a natural progression of any sufficiently successful company. They've successfully maximized their current value so now they must exploit and plunder that value to push into other markets. Its why Netflix has video games, its why YouTube pushes Shorts, and why Facebook got into VR, and why Tesla is getting into AI and robotics and on and on and on...

1
kbin.earth

Reddit IS a forum, full stop. It's not a new or unique idea.

This place is also a forum. You can down vote this post all you like, but you're still doing it on a forum.

-2
lemmy.world

been banned on reddit for stating the truth already and tried many times to fix things. reddit is anti free speech on all accounts when it was nothing inflamatory just stating truth and their mods are mostly corrupt anyway for their industry agendas. lots of ai bots and spam. useless platform when it gets incorporated it becomes useless

17
lemmy.world

At the end of the day that site is private property and at anytime the owners can boot anyone out they deem as "harmful".

7
lemmy.ml

Same is true here. But with the fediverse, if you feel a instance youre on is shit, you can switch and still be on lemmy. No more searching for a new service. We are home. Even if the house burns down now and then we will rebuild in the same damn place.

8

In theory. Since the user mass is so low if your house burn, well even if you have sole other they arent place to live either. So this reddit mechanism still work here

1

So when the shitty AI moderation kills your latest account, your new one won't be able to access the only decent interface. Good to know.

I only use reddit now to mod two subreddits. If I lose that account, that's it, I'm gone. I already stopped posting news to my local city one because I just don't care enough.

17

Same, a long time ago.

I never posted anything close to political or "sketchy" either. Was never impolite; it was just a place for niches. I still don't know why I was banned/shadowbanned...

3

I am not signed in and old reddit works fine. I have noticed that subreddit specific search nsfw tick boxes dont always load for whatever reason.

1
europe.pub

I still follow some webcomics and search for things occasionally on Reddit. Using Redlib has been fantastic. Don't need to worry about their interface changes. Don't need to worry about having an account. Just input the few subscriptions I need into the Redlib docker container. All my devices are setup to redirect Reddit links to my Redlib deployment.

16

I'd like to use redlib, but I'm ruining the image with the "latest" tag and it doesn't work saying it's 12 releases behind. Flaky at best.

I cant get into old reddit anymore. Im kinda bummed as there is some subreddits like the litrpg community I cant find here or anywhere on the fedi. Oh well...

14
reddthat.com

Old.reddit still works fine on firefox on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 8+ but my PC, pixel fold, and every other device only lets me view the old style when browsing multiple subreddits. If I want to see an individual subreddit I append the address with a banned sub e.g. old.reddit.com/r/buildapcsales+narcofootage.

12

on mobile, i use the sink it and old reddit redirect to make it usable on a phone, so you dont need to zoom in.

1

So if I understand this right… people who left because they were mad, won’t have an old reddit to ever come back to if they ever decide to go back and haven't logged in for awhile?

11
ardi60reply

5

It likely will only work for that sub. Betchya Redit will still block users from subs you don’t actively moderate

3

existing users who haven't used it for six months will also be barred.

Wow, that really is awful. If I don't use Reddit every six months I'm permanently kicked out of it? (Am I reading that right?)

I rarely go there, but when I do want to look up something I like to have the option.

(pls don't pretend like new reddit exists, thx)

11

Just realized I've not visited reddit in months now. The info id typically find there is now out of date, and anything that is valuable you need to wade through useless bland repetitive comments, obvious attention whores, and advertisements posing as content. It's just not worth the time for me anymore.

10

lemmy.world

While I still browse reddit, all my interactions are made here and will stay that way.

Platform killed itself. Userbase is half bots, and out of the rest a majority of them are the tic-toc crowd.

8

i went on reddit to ask pretty niche questions or comments, after year of getting banned, by getting a new account. i realized i was posting more than i like, so i used powersuite to delete/edit the comments.

Spez trying to act like our content is his cash cow. Get off Reddit if you're still there because pretty soon it'll just be spez and bots, already is mostly.

7

he wants more active users, to make GENUINE content, so he can let google scrape it for money.
