I doubt I would have ever figured "leased" as something being "let out, in a way".

14

No they mean the answer to the clue is "it's a trap" only if you answer "star trek" to the which sci fi is better value.

infosec.pub

If you write "Star Wars," then the correct answer is "It's a wrap," even though the Star Wars fan will likely think of "It's a trap" first. If you write "Star Trek," then the correct answer is "It's a trap!" which does not come from Star Trek.

It has either three letters too many or one letter too few, depending on whether or not you abbreviate.

I think they reused the gimmick because I definitely remember this from a few days ago

Thanks, I was wondering this. I checked 70 across in the last four Sundays and it wasn't there.

It's interesting that when tweets are shared, they almost never include the date. I wonder if that's basically natural selection? I.e., if the date is on there, people are less inclined to share it once it's outdated, so the ones that survive as memes are the ones that let people assume the tweet is still current?

2
sopuli.xyz

MOST social media don't have an actual date on it for a long time. Heck, look at these posts here. Most of them say "2 hours ago" or whatever relative time. Right now the OP says "1 day ago" for me. Which could be anywhere from 24-48 hours ago, or even a wider range depending on how they round those numbers.

If someone screenshots your post, then it gets reposted in 10 years, we'll have no context for when it happened.

When I watch an old YouTube video, it might say "6 years ago" which could be a video created before COVID quarantine, to well within the window. The UI makes it very difficult to see the actual date/time that things were posted.

The real, most trolling cruelty here is that if you say "Star Wars" you can't have "It's a trap!"

And Star Trek fans will have to endure a Star Wars meme staining their choice.

41

I think the bigger cruelty is that you aren't going to get the across right away regardless without STAR filled in. But if you immediately get "It's a trap!" then you are going to later get trolled with Star Trek being better.

No idea. It was my first time seeing it, so I just thought it was neat and wanted to share.

It's from the February 6, 2022 New York Times crossword puzzle.

Props to the designer, that must have felt amazing to turn in

32

Hate to break it to you...but so is Star Trek. Instead of the Force, it's psionics (Vulcans), telepathy (Betazeds), and "things that science can't explain yet" (Q, all of the god-tier aliens that Kirk had to deal with). A lot of times, there is no explanation for why an alien can do magic other than they're an alien.

3

So was Star Trek. There was not really any science in there.

1
startrek.website

I make the argument that Star Wars is not science fiction, rather a fantasy that takes place in space. Science and technology do not drive the stories, nor are they the solutions to the problems that arise. They are incidental and could just as well be replaced with actual magic. They tried to go the other way by explaining the force with midiclorians... Which was accepted by basically no one.

lemmy.dbzer0.com

If this is old enough, that distinction didn't exist... at least not in popular discourse. Lasers and shit was SciFi, even if it had magic or whatever.

3

This is why libraries put the sci fi and fantasy sections together, so they can avoid being drawn into these kinds of debates.

Bro, you got some weird brain worms. Not considering Star Wars as science fiction based on some technical hubbub is like calling Trump a communist because he the reginality of caucus results in his disposition to yearn for the masses. That ain't real life. This is science, bitch. Get with the God damn. It is as it are and be so it will do, so it shall.

How do crossword writers make those perfect square crosswords with every letter in two words, after you fill in enough words how do you not get to a point where there are no words that fit

7

I imagine they just play 1-person scrabble with infinite pieces. Then they put the descriptions afterwards.

That's kind of trolling both fanbases at the same time.

Yesterday puzzmo.com did it with "what colour was the dress". You could either answer blue or gold and it fit. But it wasn't as good as this one. And I don't think You can access archived crosswords on puzzmo.

Edit: It was today, so You can still access it for a couple of hours.

They both started good but got progressively worse with each revival until J. J. Abrams destroyed them both.

I'll always be more of a Star Wars fan, though, since I grew up in a time when Star Wars was still good but Star Trek was already going down the toilet.

sh.itjust.works

Hmm. I can't imagine exactly when that is. Both of them have kinda been swirling the drain off-and-on since their inceptions. Star Trek's OG series has as many absolutely terrible episodes as great ones. This is Star Trek's MO. TNG and DS9 are some of the more consistent Trek series, but even those have their share of bad episodes. The movies are also a mixed bag. Nu-Trek is just awful, but at least the IP has redeemed itself somewhat with Strange New Worlds and the Lower Decks.

The first Star Wars is only good thanks to some fantastic editing and effects. Empire is the only legitimately great Star Wars movie. Then the Ewoks arrived and it's been downhill since then with maybe the exception of some of the newer series (Mandalorian, Andor) that I haven't been able to bring myself to watch since I've been nothing but disappointed with Star Wars since I went to see the prequels in the theaters when they came out. I'm sorry, but whatever weird cultural significance the prequels have ironically managed to attain, they are awful movies and do nothing but shit on the already-tarnished legacy of the franchise. Then, the sequels doubled-down and made Star Wars completely unwatchable. Maybe some of the newer series are pretty good, I'll probably never find out.

As someone who hates all of star wars outside of the original trilogy (and the Dark Forces and Tie Fighter games, those kick ass), and even then, is sick to death of the trilogy and the star wars IP as a whole; please watch Andor.

It's just incredible sci-fi that happens to take place in star wars, and it's extremely relevant to our current times in a way no other show has really captured. It's extremely well written, shot, scored, acted... It's probably my favorite sci-fi thing ever, not just my favorite star wars media, and I'm a picky bastard.

It was so good I bought a bluray of it. It was even good enough to make me curious if the Mandalorian was comparable (it was not, not even close).

I really, strongly recommend you give it a shot despite the star wars label, I'd recommend sailing the high seas or grabbing the bluray of season 1 to avoid needing a Disney+ subscription.

6

I'll happily vouch for it too. The writing is emotional, well acted and painfully poignant in our current world, to the point that I'm surprised Disney even let them make the commentary they did. It could easily stand alone divorced from the Star Wars setting.

What other similar, yet inferior sci-fi would you relate it to?

that episode where he was captured by Romulans and transported to Tatooine to diagnose the genetic defect in Jabba's grandchild who was part Ferengi. It was fun watching Quark exaggerate a limp to try sell House's stick back to him on the Falcon

Does Doctor Who have a franchise that it is compared to with a similar name?

Ignore my ignorance. I misunderstood what you meant by that. It's a shame that it's one letter off.

A superposition crossword answer is what I was thinking. It's a good analogy in that there are only two working choices across, but the 8 working choices down. I guess you could also use "star tres" for a 3rd solution too, that's an extra nifty crossword hidden joke.

Of course, space westerns aren't science fiction. Cowboys were constantly traveling to other worlds. Why do you think they always ride off into the sunset? They're doing a slingshot around the sun so that they don't wear out their horses.

8

Exactly! But fair point. They do lean a lot more into the fiction though.

2

...what do you think space westerns are, romantic comedies?

And they're both space westerns. Trek is about a frontier, and Star Wars is a literal western with space cowboys, set in space.

If a story has prominent fictional science, then it's science fiction. FTL travel, freezing people in carbonite and reviving them, midichlorians, etc etc etc, - Star Wars is definitely science fiction.
