Infections at birth substantially increase the risk of autism and intellectual disability, study finds
Note: this refers to a small portion of autism cases that are not due to inherited genetic factors.
I find it rather ironic (after decades of misinformation on the subject thanks to Wakefield) that the conclusion of this research is that vaccines can prevent autism in specific cases!

maybe autism is a retreat from a stressful situation that becomes habitual.
Infections have many other lasting effects on development, so it seems like this would have been established earlier.
I wonder if this also explains “small portion of cases” of dark skin, red hair, or cilantro tasting like soap that are not due to inherited genetic factors?

P.S. Autistic people have far more medical comorbidities in general than neurotypicals, so this seems a likely correlation once again confused with causation mistake.
