Just started inline skating again at 40
I went ice skating for the first time in 30 years back in January, and started inline skating again after. I skated some when I was a kid, but I am now better than I was then. I am working on wolverines/turns right now. It's really fun, but I need new wheels on my hand-me-down skates.

RIP.
I'm in fairly decent shape and I used to skate around a bunch when I was a kid. My first night I fell 3 times on the same hip. It left a nasty bruise, but really didn't hurt afterward.
I hit 25 mph/40 kmh downhill the other day. I'm not doing tricks or anything, just turns and skating around.
Eric, your body called. It said, “any day now I’m gonna fuck this bitch up.” You be careful while throwing your ass down a hill on wheels at your age. 🍿💋
I hope not, but falling is pretty much guaranteed! I should get some wrist guards definitely. I skateboarded when I was younger also, so I have experience with risky stuff.
keep your knees bent
Does that make the concrete feel softer when the butt hits it? ;)
I will, but I was doing one legged stuff yesterday with a straight leg!
When you hurt yourself, and you will, you won't heal as well, and it will remind you for the rest of your life, "Hey remember that time you thought you were 15 years younger? No? How about now!" ARRRGH.
But, if you're going to do it, better now, than later.
Good luck, you'll need it.
I'm happy that skating is coming back. I always preferred it to a bike
Definitely get wrist guards and a helmet! For the hips, nowadays there are also pads for those
Is inline coming back? I have a much younger sister in college and I she was wearing some really 90s looking jeans a bit back. I really hope inline does make a comeback, because I love skating and it's like $15 to skate for 2 hours at the ice rinks, and $12 dollars at the big indoor inline rink nearby. Skating is so fun, and I get to use my muscle memory from childhood.
I do need to get new wheels, new bearings, plus at least wrist guards. Wrist guards are more important I think because you can fall pretty well using your skates and wrist guards, so I think it's probably safer to have guards alone rather than a helmet alone, but I am a broke former skateboarder, so I know what risk is. I am broke as hell right now though, otherwise I'd buy both.
I'd love to start a group skate along either the 202 Parkway Trail or the Peace Valley Trail if anyone is around the BucksMont area in Pennsylvania.
Oh yeah. At least in Poland, among the millenials. When I was getting back into it a few years ago I was rather "one of the weirdos" on the bicycle lanes. Even though "nightskating" groups have already existed it wasn't that common sight on a regular day. Few years later I stopped saying "hi" to other skaters because the other side was more often weirded out on me saying "hi" than seeing another skater - clear sign that it became more popular
As for a skate group - maybe that would be a use-case for fedihood?
There is actually a huge Polish community in Philly, maybe we can get them into it as well!
I am a former comp sci major but no experience running an actual service, but yea anything to promote skating would be good. I never see anyone on inlines. Inlines skaters were called fruit booters in the US back in the day. Homophobic slur thing, so it was never as popular as skateboarding. That is sort of why I didn't start again sooner really.
I don't mean running it. fedihood is fairly new but has focus on locality. That's why I think it might work for your use-case
Yeah, here skateboarding was also "the thing" back then
Okay I hadn't heard of that
Where do you rollerblade? Park? Road? Sidewalk? Last time i tried it, i found the road and sidewalk surfaces to be too “vibrational” for lack of a better description. Felt like trying to skate on gravel. Do they make skates that smooth this out?
My development had a lot of streets resurfaced recently so I'm lucky in that I have a ton of nice blacktop to skate. I also have some ~8 mile asphalt trails, one goes around a man-made lake.
Also you get used to the sensation. Obviously some surfaces are better than others, none are as smooth as ice
