A fisherman is sitting in his boat and decides to smoke, only to discover he didn't bring any matches.

He throws a cigarette overboard, and the boat becomes a cigarette lighter.

Not gonna lie it took me a second or two to get it !

When I first heard this one years ago I was in the same boat (heh)

I kept thinking that a "cigarette lighter" was some kind of boat, like maybe a clipper or something used by smugglers. Painfully close to the punchline

I love that the joke answer aligns with the physical answer here. Water weighs around 8 lbs per gallon while butane weighs about 5 lbs per gallon.

I came here to mention that it isn't even a joke, it is a fact.

Butane does has a specific gravity of 0.601 vs water's 1.0

That's the specific gravitational acceleration

lol yeah i get what you mean but it's a physics joke. whenever something starts with specific-, it means, you divide the quantity by the mass of the object. so for example specific impulse has the unit m/s (like velocity), because you divide the impulse (linear momentum, kg·m/s) by mass (kg) and get m/s.

if you divide force by mass, you get acceleration, which is always the same.

Nothing can be Everything is heavier than a Bic. No matter what, the Bic is always a little lighter.

I think you have that first half backwards...

Ah. I read it wrong. I thought the conclusion was "Butane. It's a lighter fluid."

2

You could skip "Water" and just hit the punchline. "Butane is a lighter fluid" answers the question.

Gallon isn’t a weight measurement, only volume. It’s not like the “ton of feathers vs ton of bricks” joke.

You reached the end

What weighs more? A gallon of water or a gallon of butane? | Spyke
