Should prisons be subjecting people to those conditions?

Absolutely not.

Does it upset me that this guy is receiving this treatment? See previous answer.

Also if prison is a thing, I'd sure hope it has a way to keep prisoners who attack other prisoners separated.

39

Isn't it kinda typical to keep diddlers off to themselves? For all I know he's a celebrity in prison, but either way I'm not sure it's an environment he'd flourish in.

He's not even alpha he's a discontinued development branch. That's why it looks like a Skyrim NPC. He's from a version before they introduced realistic skin and body hair.

Would you have a source on that? I'm curious because this post implies that he doesn't want to be there

9
nord.pub

Even if he doesn't want to be there, is it possible general population would be a high risk for him, and that wardens are taking extra care given his high profile?

14

At least part of the reason he is being kept separate is because he's not actually in prison, technically he's been held pending extradition so it's more like jail, that just happens to be in a prison.

6

It seems he was arrested on charges of sex trafficking minors and rape. That's usually something inmates in prison can skin you alive for.

I don't approve that, but that's kind of an open secret about prison culture. Well, maybe not skinning alive specifically, but murder and torture - yes.

Oh yeah he's living in third world poverty conditions, and yet somehow has access to Twitter to moan about it. Something seems off.

I suspect what is actually happening is that he's in protective custody, because everyone wants to stab him either because they hate him because even criminals have standards, or because they reckon stabbing the alpha male will make them super duper extra alpha male++. If he were put in general population he'd probably be dead within 24 hours. I don't want him to get stabbed and die, I want him to live for a really long time in a really small prison cell.

I see what you’re saying but let’s assume he’s not lying (because we have no reason to assume he would lie on the internet). Those conditions are barbaric. We shouldn’t be subjecting people to that. We don’t get to do awful things to him because he was caught being awful to others. That solves nothing.

He made a very reasonable request. He wants to be in gen pop with the others. An Eden of culture and comfort. Totally free to swallow his own teeth in a roach-free environment.

And how can we as a humane people say no to that?

7

Maybe, just maybe he's at risk around other inmates, 'cause you know: even most inmates are people who made mistakes but are not total POS, and they wouldn't treat him nicely.

1

Any high profile inmate is going to be given "special treatment" as you said anyone in gen pop is going to want to make a name for themselves. Mabey they won't care who he is or mabey he can put a gang together quickly for protection (doubt). Most prisoners aren't going to Accept his hard man persona and would see him as a rich person ripe for extortion.

That said he is milking a systems that has been cronicly underfunded and hasn't kept pace with most studies with prisoners wellbeing. I doubt they are as bad as he says but complaining about not having hot water seems a bit low on his issues right now.

1

You forgot rape, sex trafficking, prostitution, solicitation of minors etc.

And that across multiple jurisdictions, flop g caught himself multiple times the punishment because he did it in a stupid way too.

In fact he is on record lying under oath and the court already found him not credible, he fucked himself legally before the trial has even begun.

He hasn't got it easy with a brain like this.

36
slrpnk.net

Dude obviously doesn't see the upside. Hey, here's still allowed to send these novel-length tweets! (Somehow. Dunno why though.)

39
lemmy.world

He's having a shit time in prison, but is still able to tweet about it? Since when are inmates allowed social media? What a douche.

33

Probably though an intermediate. So he would have calls and someone on the outside who can tweet for him. He may even send letters or have access to prison monitored technology. Still more than he gave to the girls and women he trafficked.

13
lemmy.world

Absolutely! People we hate deserve inhumane treatment because we're moral and ethical and have the right reasons!!! We rule!!!

-15

You are grossly underestimating the situation when you turn this into an issue of personal hate. We are talking about a person who is damaging the world at large by actively turning younger generation into mysoginist, toxic males, likely committing sex slave trafficking (wouldn't be surprised if minors involved) and making tons of money out of both. When you turn this into an issue of "hate" then you are either pointing at the wrong target conciously (for whatever reason I can not say) or really haven't thought this through at all.

Clutterreply

No, we just like to see these people in the process of learning that being treated like shit is not fun. And that you should therefore not do the same to others.

And yeah there's a bit of schadenfreude in there feeling justice being served to an absolute vile shitty human being.

9
lemmy.world

...learning that being treated like shit is not fun. And that you should therefore not do the same to others.

I agree, which is why I don't cheer when anybody does it. I hope you eventually learn that enjoying somebody's suffering doesn't actually resolve your personal anger issues, it just makes it easier and easier to enjoy other people's suffering.

2

Not really, I am relatively old, have always been like this and the set of people whose suffering would make me happy is small (basically people who fuck up the world at large for personal gain). I haven't turned into some grumpy mean old guy who fantasizes about making a person who annoys me suffer, or even those who are locally a menace to people around them. Anger issues? Again maybe only against a very small set of people. I don't think there is anyone around me that would categorize me as particularly angry.

I think the words you are looking might be frustration (at being able to do almost nothing when some people really fuck the world up) and losing hope (that there are just some people who don't have a single ounce of conscience in them).

4

No no, I would much rather Andrew Tate not be punished for his crimes. That would mean we lived in a world where he wasn't allowed to (or simply didn't) put his victims in worse conditions where they were raped, beaten, and forced to make porn.

We do not live in that world. Furthermore, there are young men who idolize this man. They need to be taught that actions have consequences and that they should not replace him. His suffering will send that message well.

3

It's not so much "enjoyment". I get no pleasure from the hurt being inflicted upon people. I DO get enjoyment from seeing justice served. And yes, there is a difference, I love that he feels a little of what his victims have been feeling for much longer and much deeper. Without being heard or seen.

And he is still being heard and seen, which means: to me; he is not hurting enough for justice to have been served.

2

Does it help that I'm only happy he's suffering because he made his victims live in worse conditions?

The conditions in our prisons are deplorable, but every so often, they end up being an ironic punishment.

4

The bright side of this is while he's in the worst cell, he's occupying that spot, no one else is.

Changing jail conditons for everyone will take time.

Meanwhile, probably better him than anyone else in that prison.

1

Morality is not being soft on people who need help and also being soft on people who need punishment or retribution.

Your virtue is in being soft with the good people and also being equally harsh with the bad ones.

1

Oh, no. It is rather terrible that his crimes put him in such a difficult place.

I mean, I'm totally for prison reform. But I bet you this guy doesn't give a shit about the subject.

31
Echo Dotreply

The hilarious thing is that he's only in this situation because he has put himself in this situation. He's in prison in the US at the behest of the UK government who want him extradited. If he wasn't fighting the extradition he wouldn't be in the US prison system anymore. UK prisons aren't exactly Scandinavian style, but they're better than the US ones.

Of course if he is extradited he is going to get the book thrown at him. He'll die in prison, in like 50 years or so.

9

Good, get fucked. This malignant cunt is responsible for mentally ruining an entire generation of young men and the rapes and exploitation of countless women and girls, he deserves all of that and more.

29

It’s so nice in this world full of horrible insane headlines to get some of these great positive human interest stories every now and then.

28

Whether he's being truthful is the question, but those conditions should be absolutely unacceptable, no matter who's in there. When the state takes responsibility for housing inmates, they need to do it right. It should be clean, they should be treated humanely (insofar that's possible when you're keeping people in cells) and they should be kept healthy.

I see in this thread a lot of people whose gut reaction is to be happy that a piece of shit is being treated like this, but you guys do realize that this treatment is not just limited to Tate, right? Do we really want a society where this shit is accepted, or in this case even praised? It degrades all of us.

25

The irony is, despite all his bitching, they’re protecting him. He’d be thrown around like a dog’s toy if he was in GP. Prison really is not the place for a pretend tough guy.

24
lemmy.ca

Though I get the hurr-durr he earned it replies, is this really who we want to be? Shouldn't all prisoners, including the ones we don't like, have the right to some basic human decency?

Yes, this guy is a dip shit criminal asshole, but I am not. I am better than him, and I feel that cheering his inhumane conditions makes me like him. Makes me an asshole.

18

I think the most upvoted comment here, with more upvotes than the post even from what I can see, is probably how most people feel: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/comment/28189667

I think most people don't want to have anyone in these conditions, but he as an individual is not going to garner any sympathy by talking about it. I'm all for prison reform, but hearing him complain about his conditions doesn't spur me to any do any action I wasn't already going to do. I'm not motivated to march to improve his personal conditions. If what he's saying is true, which I doubt only because he's a known liar and fraud, then I do hope that the conditions in the prison improve. I'm just not shedding any tears for him in the interim.

16

Not going to bother to reply to the one who replied to you already, I feel like it's a wasted effort.

But I agree with you. I read this before seeing the name at the top, and felt deep remorse for another human's suffering. Reading the name at the top didn't change that, it just informed me that the person suffering was someone who has done terrible things. But that doesn't change that a human is suffering.

Justice is not revenge, justice is not punitive, justice is not violent unless it must be. Justice is removing someone from society until they can be rehabilitated, and removing them from society permanently if they cannot be. But removed from society does not mean abused, beaten, neglected, or treated like an animal in a cage. That makes the jailer just as guilty of criminality as the jailed.

Think of it this way: if someone attacks you with a knife, and you defend yourself and kill them, you have acted in self defense. If someone attacks you with a knife, you get away, and then spend a year hunting them down and kill them, you are a murderer. Just because that person has committed an act of violence does not give you license to premeditatively plan their assault or torture. Jails are purpose built, they are planned, we know what we are building when we build them. To intentionally build a university of crime with professors of cruelty is a premeditated act of violence against people who have not even yet been convicted.

We desperately need prison reform

10

I don't think anyone who suggesting that prisons don't need to be reformed. But if anyone deserve this treatment it's him.

It's also worth noting that he's probably laying on quite thick to try and garner some sympathy, he's not exactly known for being a truthful individual.

4

Agree. I also think an innocent until proven guilty attitude wouldn't go amiss. Honestly, he's an absolute cunt and I have a strong dislike for him and his manosphere bullshit. I think grifters like him are harmful and absolutely worthy of our collective disdain and derision. But punishment needs to happen after trial and a proven verdict.

3

In principle, you're not wrong. In practice, I'm absolutely not above taking sheer glee in his suffering. Does that make me a bad person? Probably. But at this point I'm past caring. He doesn't deserve empathy when he has none for anyone else and has spent his entire career teaching people that empathy is weakness. Scum like him and the people who enable them only exist to make the world a worse place and if they all died tomorrow we'd be significantly better off.

I just don't believe what he's writing, his whole career is built on lies and the other prison tweets seem like bullshit as well.

2

Oh sure, the guy is a lying asshole. I was just talking about how what he describes seems to be common in the USA.

1

I had to scroll so far down to find this sentiment. I support your view 100%. Prison as an example should be about attempting reform, not cruelty and sadism.

1
stevlesreply
aussie.zone

People deserve what they've earned; this is the core of justice. It's natural to feel pleased when justice is served, but remorse should be directed at the victims, not the criminal.

-4

Who is talking about remorse? I just don't want people to be tortured in the name of justice. That isn't justice, that is revenge. If you're all about revenge then by all means, that us your opinion, but at least be honest about it

I don't want revenge. These prisoners one day will get out and they will once again be pur neighbors. I want a person who has grown, who has improved, who has their anti social behaviors controlled and who won't need to display criminal behavior again. I dont want a person neck deep in PTSD of all the terrors they lived in a US prison living next to me, ready to snap at an instant.

That is the pragmatic part. There is also the ethical part where these people, these humna beings, are still, you know, humans and they deserve some basic level of dignity and respect.

Then there is also the part where in the USA nobody gives a shit about why people commit crimes to begin with, even though that is the core question to answer. Fix those issues, and you lower crime. This, however, requires ending poverty, endinc racism, ending the endless focus on "I needs all the moneys!!!" and having universal (mental) healthcare and of course in case of the USA, ending the free flow of guns. Fix those issues and watch your crime rates crash.

But alas, its much easier to just act as if these people aren't people but vermin you can step on. This way, the for profit prisons can continue to bathe in golden bathtubs while the gun industry can post record profits in times of school shootings and the medical industry too can all drive multiple luxury cars. That solution is much better, isn't it.

1
feddit.org

Not a problem, they can make up for it by throwing a couple of stink bombs in there.

2

Given how much he was lying about conditions previously, nobody should be feeling elated yet. But on the bright side, by taking the stand in his extradition bail hearing he hurt his chances in any future trials, especially any he testifies in.

11

Those are the type of conditions guys like this champion thinking they'll never have to endure them.

14

Damn bro, they tried to provide you with some extra protein in your new digs and you're still bitchin, smh my head

8
lemmy.world

I don't like him. But prisons should be a place to put people with some dignity. The punishment is taking away their freedom.

You.want.to.rehabilite.people.back.into.society. Not possible with all, but most can. People make mistakes and learn from them.

Andrew tate can fuck off and get lifelong though.

8

I wouldn't automatically believe him either. I have no idea what prisoners in the US can really expect but at the minimum prisons are required to maintain livable conditions, so that means reasonable temperature, and access to proper sanitation, although not necessarily in the cell itself.

I can totally believe the cell doesn't have access to hot water, due to the obvious safety risk of giving problem prisoners access to hot water, but if that's the case he will absolutely have access to public showers, and being the amazing alpha male that he is, I'm sure he has no problem at all with using communal facilities.

He's just trying to get some sympathy because he knows that if he ends up getting deported, he's screwed.

3

You'd think the lack of air conditioning would make up for the lack of hot water.

7

I imagine a parallel universe where he lives in a trailer and is methed out of his mind trying to convince others on the internet he’s wealthy and powerful and successful because his Lowe’s bucket is superior to the Home Depot bucket his neighbor has. He has designer clothes he stole from goodwill. Men respect him (he’s their dealer and doesn’t charge) and women fear him (he doesn’t bathe and only speaks at one ungodly high volume). For his next video he’ll be camping on a park bench due to the restraining order from his exotic dog, a breed called “stray”.

An alpha male.
