The Sun is absolute toilet paper, but given that more reputable media (relative to the Sun) are reporting on it as well, I'm inclined to believe it happened. I'm sure more will come out and a major publication will cover it soon.

Yes, both sides are bad. But it's like having a puppy mulching machine that only uses live puppies. The current goal is to vote for the side that throws in 1 puppy a day in order to stop the side that throws in 1 puppy a minute. Then, once the puppy-a-minute people are sufficiently far from the puppy mulching machine, the goal shifts to voting for the side the throws in zero puppies instead. Right now it's not possible to go to zero puppies, so gotta work with what's possible, no matter how much it sucks. At the same time keeping away the feral ones that throw in boxfuls of puppies constantly, which is getting harder by the day since they made friends with the puppy-a-minute people.
