Disappointing

Nice try Linus, but I wouldn't watch your review even if it was the last one on earth.

Your loss, he might drop some tips on cool accessories for your private jet.

Would you be interested if I tell you it's a great showcase of nepotism?

Amazing, so that means people would buy the Index less, the first gen Vive will go down and I can finally afford Google Cardboard.

EDIT: 1 downvote is Gabe.

Streaming only from Windows for now?? Well that's fucking disappointing.

People have already been streaming VR from Steam Machine to Quest devices, so something doesn't add up.

Maybe they’re talking about foviated streaming in particular?

I figure they are working on it though. I can't imagine it will take long for them to solve it.

Well that's why you don't buy it until it's been fixed.

Personally not sure if I'll ever buy it, but if I do it'll be only after Linux is supported.

2

Same. There's only 1 Windows install in my household and I'm pretty sure XP is not supported.

$60 for the ergonomic kit, which is a couple of pieces of fabric, is rough. Doesn't bode well for the price of the HMD.

I suspect Linux/Machine streaming will be there at launch and might be a reason they've been so late with the launch. We've seen quite a few Linux fixes in recent SteamVR releases.

They might sell it near cost, since the only practical way to use it is through Steam. I understand why they didn’t do that with the Steam Machine, because that’s very easy to use without Steam.

I mean, near cost still wouldn’t be a good price, but there’s not a lot of advantage to sell it at a high price for them. Much less reason for anyone to buy into their VR ecosystem rather than Meta’s.

TL;DW for anyone just looking for any new information:

  • Ergo kit is $60 (I assume USD)
    • two hand straps to make the controllers more like Knuckles controllers
    • head strap
    • nose light guard for smaller noses
  • Game streaming from Linux does not work at the moment
    • Valve is reportedly working on it, and it may or may not be ready on release
    • This video seems to have been recorded 24 August according to the date on his watch
  • Power supply sold separately
    • 45 watt
    • No price given
  • The initial experience is basically just a wireless Index (for better or worse)

Almost a year after initial unveiling and they still haven't figured out streaming from their own hardware!?

Do we know what the real embargo date was supposed to be? Like was the upload off by hours, days, weeks?

No, we regular old users have no idea. But the best bet at this point is this coming Monday.

You reached the end
