A slightly unusual format because I just can't tell this joke anywhere else.

There's a little town just across the James River from me named Surry. Apparently the city council is considering borrowing millions of dollars to build a new YMCA. One of the residents has written a letter to the local newspaper:

Can Surry afford a Y?

All I can think: Well, if they can't, they're going to be Surr from now on…

And now you understand. I can't tell anyone else about this anywhere. It's a news article that doesn't allow comments. It came up in my news feed because I mod /r/NewportNews and this is news outside the city I can't post there. I could post to c/Virginia, I guess, but I suspect they wouldn't appreciate it. So you all are my only hope. :)

edit: y'all made my day. <3

So does my wife, poor thing, who has to put up with me telling her all the silly funny puns I make on the internet that often get downvoted (and very rarely get upvoted like this post lol)

  • Can Surry afford a Y? . . .

No Surr, it cannot. Surry had to borrow the Y for now.

I heard this town was also considering a city council consisting of its most eccentric and outlandish citizens. It’d be called β€œSurry with the Fringe on Top.”

Oh, no. That project was put on hold. The environmental impact study determined that it would cause Chicks and Ducks and Geese to scurry.

This story reminds me of an infamous gaff on the front page of a local newspaper back in 1994… back when i used to hock newspapers on a street corner. Had a lot of laughs that day.

The St. Augustine Record printed a famous, accidental front-page typo that read "100 Years of Pubic Service" instead of Public Service

haha, paper man's nightmare that. My wife's father worked for the Miami Herald for decades, although as a.... can't think of the term, reporter but not news, like life stories, public (pubic?) interest stuff. lol.

My mom worked for her local paper for a few years on the linotype machine, which I will now prove by saying ETOIN SHRDLU :)

Yah the editor in chief issued a public apology but it was talk of the town for quite a while lol. I'm sure the article is on microfiche somewhere lol.
oh wow that's interesting...yah lots of funny stories from hanging around the old print machines...when they worked properly lol.

I've seen that in the Lifestyles section or Society Pages.

I don’t know if it’s my lack of brain cells left or not but I cackled loudly at this
