Close Covers: AKA covers of classic bangers that come close to the original while doing something different

Be me. Busy at work, music going. And this old favorite pops up at random after a few years of forgetting about it. Lol I fucking played the shit out of this one in sets back in the early 10s. I think we've all heard a few creative and fantastic covers. This being a SoM cover I can easily think of a couple of good Stones covers SoM did. Share the covers that got your attention here. The only requirement is dark and gothy.

Also "Memorabilia" by Soft Cell! I was trying to remember that last night.

Hehe yep, there's still plenty more to chose from. Especially since we haven't even touched on genera like horror punk or psychobilly. Such as Emanuela Hutter's vocal rendition of Blondie's Call Me by Hillbilly Moon Explosion.

Might post a track by Nim Bind reworking a Bowie song from the movie Labyrinth later.

LOL yes he's done the number of really good out of geanera covers like this. I remember the first time I heard this I was like the safety dance? That's kind of an odd follow-up to the other things I've been posting but then when I realized who it was and heard the lyrics I was floored. Yes the original was a favorite when I was young. It's anti-establishment Anarchist energy still resonates today.

Oh yeah Apoptygma Berserk is awesome, they have a killer cover of Smashing Pumpkin's "Disarm". The mix is more dancy but it's as good as the original imho:

Disarm - Original

Speaking of dancy covers, I really like this version of Siouxie's "Cities in Dust" by Junkie XL with Lauren Rocket:

Cities in Dust - Original

Damn yes I forgot about disarm. It is a very dancy cover and I love it.

Jxl is goated. Not very gothy in general. Much more breakbeat and perhaps industrial. I remember waiting to get the Saturday teenage kick album as soon as it was released way back when. He certainly can slay on a remix. The version he did have a little less conversation is goated as well. Honestly genre bending covers are some of my favorite.

The Brains version of Enjoy the Silence hits that spot. Like Dave Ghan on meth with a stand up bass.

I posted a cover like a week ago that I think is excellent: Galaxie 500 doing Joy Division / New Order's "Ceremony" in a dream-pop style: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=av2ApbIdNSI When the song first started playing I thought: now way they can pull this off, but it's in the same league as the originals.

Nice, definitely a solid cover. Very close and very true to the original.

Tiamat's cover of The Stones Sympathy For The Devil is another solid cover. Though to be fair. The Stones were 100% proto goth so they made it easy. I can think of several covers of shelter. And could do an hour or more of just covers of paint it black.

Good ole Clayton. I do enjoy his new project.

But damn I had been sleeping on The Twilight Sad's new stuff. Not heard that cover before. And I love me some Twilight sad. Their old album artwork always stood out to me, and kind of told a story in a Serial fashion. Definitely worth checking out.

Not bad hadn't heard that one before. So now it's tormenting me. Because I heard a really decent cover of it a week or two ago and I'm racking my brains trying to remember what it was

I love this thread :-) really takes me back to the 00s and surrounding when i was still hanging out in goth clubs, thank you all for your great submissions - my playlist has grown by a huge amount :-) Still looking for something i can submit :-)

Speaking of the early aughts. Reminds me of Terminal Choice covering Katy Perry's 2008 song I kissed a girl. Without a gender flip it comes off a bit silly. But still was everywhere at the time. Bonus: Nekromantix doing a much more ghoulish rework.

Another one for today. Bowie is a classic. Not necessarily goth but super adjacent and influential. And what's not to love about Bauhaus or Nosferatu covering him.

Wesley is no Ian. That's probably a good thing for his own health. But he's the closest thing since. There's definitely a reason that his project keeps getting compared to New Order and Joy Division. In the best ways possible at that.

Interesting, not familiar with orvel peck. Daniel I've listened to for almost 20 years. Though I need to catch up with him. I didn't keep up for about 6 years during his Joe Letz stretch. So I haven't heard most of his post covid stuff.

He is kind of niche, he's a gay cowboy that sings country music. This is the only song I know by him.

I get so much country out here I tend to avoid it heh. And not the good stuff. Kenny, Dolly, Johnny, Kenny, Hank Sr, Willie etc. The mass produced jingoistic self aggrandizing kind. This isn't that 🙂

The ones like Johnny or even Kenny are respected for their range and talent. Kenny wasn't afraid to sing a song written by a disco Beegee written for a deceased R&B artist. Dolly too. And of course Johnny and Trent. They were artists and not just a generic product.

I don't like most country music, with that said I like Merle Haggard, the and the Flying Burrito Brothers, and Mike Nesmith.

I also really like this cover by Elvis Costello.

Psycho

That whole album is good.

Yeah Merle is good. I am familiar in passing with the burrito brothers. And who the monkeey? Honestly I had not really looked into anything he did after that. Though I know he did have a career. I will have to check that out later looks really interesting. And Elvis well that should go without saying.

Good catch. I had forgotten about ole Nick Fiend. And that was my first mistake!

It was in my industrial music Playlist. BTW, thanks for turning me on to YouTube music.

2

Yes when I was deciding to go with a service. It was the only one that had the things I wanted the most. One artist in particular Pandora had nothing on. While Spotify I think had one album at best. The nice thing about YouTube music. Is that they have most of that. Plus all the content ever uploaded to YouTube as well. You can find some real deep cut stuff that would never show up on the others. Classic 1980s Japanese postpunk? Yes.

Porl just released his new album. With three solid cover tracks on it. I think I've already posted at least one of the other two. But here he is covering red lorry yellow lorry with talk about the weather
