Uh, I guess he was thinking in terms of distros using .DEB packages via APT. Ubuntu, Kali, Debian, and so many alone use DEB packages.

It is really just about the last panel, but that didn't came without the other three, so...

1

Slackware, debian, arch, suse, gentoo, Linux from scratch,...

Damn I'm old.

That was too easy. Name 10 things that cause endless flame wars on linux!

systemd

i'm constantly switching back and forth between them as well as helix. I like them all.

This comment officer. This is the one that hurt me.

slrpnk.net

There's two variants of Debian: Debian, and "damn, this distro is not as flexible as I'd like, I guess I should have just installed Debian in the first place".

29

Bazzite, Debian, Linux Mint...Arch.... Ubuntu....

That's five I could think of off top of my head.

I got 50% right, okay!

Once you get to Ubuntu, just continue down that rabbit hole of flavors. Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Bananafanafubuntu, etc...

Can you name 10 base/independent distros?

1
jcorverareply

Debian, OpenSUSE, Fedora, Arch, GuixSD, NixOS, Slack, Gentoo, LFS, and I want to say... Knoppix?

2

Knoppix is a fun one :) Didn't know it was independent.

1

::: spoiler spoiler Debian, Arch, Fedora, OpenSUSE, NixOS, Slackware, AerynOS, Alpine, Gentoo, LFS :::

Rpm is really more analogous to dpkg. Does the local work, doesn't talk to repositories.

Apt to...not yum anymore. checks Dnf.

I'm not sure which one would properly call a "package manager", the apt/dnf role or the rpm/dpkg role.

rpm/dpkg is the package format. apt/dnf/zypper is the system that downloads, unarchives, and moves files into place.

rpm and dpkg are also programs that are used for a number of local operations.

1

True. There's... a lot to unpack with this.

Package Management is weird.

I felt the same way, but have been finding Ubuntu Core to be a nifty OS for running as a VM.

There are many Debian based distros, just all the Ubuntu flavors is enough

lemmy.world

Those are based on Debian. Not Debian. If you ask for a debian and I give you pop_os, you'd probably not like it.

And flavours are flavours, not distro. It's the same distro, just different settings

Ok guys. This is the comment chain. Let’s do it. 🍿🗡️⚔️🤺

Then, if we are to follow that logic of excluding derivatives, then we get NixOS, Arch, LFS, TinyCore Linux, Gentoo, Debian (of course!) and... I give up; what else is out there?

And I use Debian, just to put it on record.

The saddest part on your comment was that Suse was my first distro and it did not register in my mind. As for Fedore, althoug I still insist calling it Red Hat.

3

I initially typed "Suse and Red Hat" but then I changed it to say Fedora because I wanted to avoid some pedantic comments about "But Red Hat doesn't exist anymore!" or on the opposite extreme, reductive inaccuracies like "But Red Hat is for enterprise!"

In other words, your comment is very valid. I also thought about just saying "RPM-based distros" because your initial list didn't have any.

And I thought about mentioning Mandriva separately, but I know that was originally a Red Hat fork, and also now we're kinda getting into the weeds...

1

Oh I don't mean derivatives doesn't count. As their own. I mean when saying "debian" you don't say "Ubuntu". Just say both

I don’t know what sarcasm is anymore.

1

Sarcasm died and left it's place to be occupied by literalism. The most ridiculous things have become literal.

1

The term I use is "Debian family", "Red Hat family", etc.

Well you see ubuntu is the same as debian so you shouldn't use debian because of canonicals snaps, stance on ai, and advertising in the terminal.

This reads as sarcasm but is generally valid points...? I guess that explains why people downvoted it

It's valid against ubuntu, but I don't see why it would touch debian users?

8

you think

Well you see ubuntu is the same as debian so you shouldn't use debian either, because debian also has canonical's snaps, stance on ai, and advertising in the terminal.

would work?

1

sh.itjust.works

I'm not sure whether you really mean Debian has all those issues or if it's sarcasm, but otherwise it's clearer you're not recommending Debian

1

Debian does not have snaps (I suppose you could install snappy, but that is the case for most distributions).

Debian also doesn't have canonical ads in its command outputs.

And debian does nor allow LLM contributions to all its related stuff, i.e. debian packaging, software projects, websites, docs, and communication.
Generally debian is pretty ai-negative where ubuntu is very ai-positive.

So this is continuing the sarcasm because obviously it's all clearly wrong.

lemmy.ml

Mint, Ubuntu, Kali, Arch, Graphene, Nyx, AmogOS (weird but still a distro), Neon, Manjaro, OPENsuse. So I know loads I guess

Also What's wrong with Debian.

-1

There's so little wrong with debian that 80% of distros ARE Debian.

13

Nothing except that the packages are far too old at least in stable, which is not an issue unless you are making your own biased distro tier list. The joke about Debian was that every Debian/Ubuntu based distro is just Debian.

Maxxiereply

MX, ubuntu, astra, mint, raspbian, kali, elementary, tails, Q4

or, in short: debian
