Meanwhile everyone's homes electricity are at risk of being shut off in order to "help save the grid" when, at least in my case, we are charged extra each month by the electric company (fuck you Xcel Energy) in order to help build up the power grid infrastructure they explicitly asked for. Yet, years after this has been happening, there's still no added infrastructure in place and even a few months ago Xcel told me they might need to shut off my areas electricity for a few hours in order to "lessen the load" on the grid. Motherfucker, what did you do with all that money you overcharged me on for 3 years straight then?
I swear, if the startup cost for getting solar panels wasn't so expensive, I'd just do that all myself. I have no faith these electricity companies will build green power, or even upgrade the grid enough to handle these garbage data centers. You'd think they would just build a solar farm with batteries in order to not, ya know, shut off people's electricity during peak hours and let them possibly boil or freeze to death. It's crazy. These companies should shut off the data centers FIRST, not our homes! Don't leave us holding the bag for your mistake.
I agree with the sentiment but...a private company distributing what is effectively just a trail cam is not an indication of how easy it would be to move the national power grid to solar. It's not even in the same ballpark in terms of cost let alone labor. That is an insane conclusion to draw.
And MAGA doesn't hate solar, they love making more money. Grid solar doesn't make them more money but Flock does
I was there! It was a common conservative talking point in the pre-COVID era. Stopped hearing it as much once Dork Sidious decided to publicly back the pedophile class. Curious as that may seem, I'm sure it's all a giant coinkidink.
datacenters tell the grid how much they use, which is slightly different than consumer electric usage where the power company can only use historical data.
I think its dangerous to assume that these cameras are a partisan thing. They went up so fast because people in power across the board invited them in.
Flock isn't directly the government, which complicates things, and as far as government use small solar panels like that have been powering highway-side speed sensors and weather stations for ages.
I'm guessing most of the anti-solar idiots have some kind of personal NIMBY issue and/or they still think coal mining and oil rigs are super cool and macho. They don't care (or even think about) small devices popping up all over the landscape like spyware herpes.

Amazing how much MAGA hated solar power except when it's to help them spy | Spyke

And masks except when it’s to commit human rights violations.

I also heard "we cant just add a massive amount of electric cars to the country, the electricity grid cannot handle the increased load"
The data centers say otherwise
In their defense, datacenters can be built anywhere, whereas EV chargers have to be built everywhere.
That said, they definitely didn't eminent-domain people's houses to build beefier power lines for EVs.
“Oh ai is different, I’m pretty sure it’ll help generate electricity for us! Musk is amazing, just trust the process!”

not that it's a big enough difference to matter.
The number of EVs registered in each state is a matter of public record, so forecasting isn’t that complicated.

I doubt MAGA likes surveillance. They understand it can be used against their freedom too, even if they like ICE raids.
Yeah, most of the MAGA people I know hate flock cameras too. Its actually been a unifying issue.

You mean the government is picking winners and losers?!?!
Cameras like this should all be powered by clean coal
For the reader at home, this means leaving them unpowered
