we can blame Gary Gygax for the modern idea of what a golem is. That uneducated fat fuck is personally responsible for more anachronisms in historical arms and armor in media than I can count and his disregard for the mythologies he "borrowed" from is just as bad.

Even in Jewish folklore, they could be made of any collection of inanimate objects not just mud or clay.
On top of that, the very first golem mentioned was Adam; the first human.
