I always pictured a tight fitting lids that don't automatically come off and a certain skill like juggling, so he always knows how to keep the things moving in a way that stops them from flying off. Maybe they are threaded leads for raccoon prevention.
Threaded, I like that idea. That way he can access the contents when need be, whatever the hell it is. Maybe some equivalent of an energy drink to keep him going on his garbage ape marathons. Or a battery pack, and it turns out he's actually like one of those mechanical cymbal-clapping monkeys.

Haven't seen that sucker for awhile. He almost seems to be sprouting a tail extension here.
I'd ask who welded the lids to the cans, and what they're actually full of, but I probably don't really want to know.
