DF64 Gen 2 (V2.5) vs DF54 (V4)
Does anyone have experience with these two grinders? I’ve narrowed my search down to these two but I’m very undecided. I know the 64 is the better grinder but I don’t know if it’s worth the extra $200 CAD.

I have the DF64 gen 2. It's geat. Prolly not worth the extra. I was about to buy DF54 but the DF64 was on sale for 350 or so, so I got it instead. My assessment at the time was that the DF54 was about twice slower. So a typical 18gr would go in 5-6s on the 64, while 10-12s on the 54. Ask away abt the 64.
I’ve heard similar things about grind speed between the two.
How’s the noise on the 64? I’ve heard the 54 is a bit quieter, which would be nice, especially for my 4:30am coffee, which is a big reason I want an electric grinder. Manually grinding beans that early in the morning isn’t as fun. But if the 64 isn’t too loud it’s less of a concern between the two.
Louder than I’d like but not unreasonable if you put the little hat on while grinding.
Do you think it would be loud enough to wake someone up on a different floor?
Different floor no. Same floor a different room, maybe. Same floor same room, definitely. I sleep down the corridor, some drywall waway from the grinder. Can hear it in the morning if I'm not sleeping. Doens't wake me up when she' s making her coffee.
Yeah about the same for me. To be fair I’ve also never used a really quiet grinder or am sure if they exist
Manuals are quiet. They spin a lot slower so I imagine a low-RPM, high-torque electric could sound like that. And take 30-60s to grind 18gr. :D
We have the DF64 gen 2 and use it everyday. I absolutely adore it. That being said, we never had the 54, so I'm not sure if the 64 is worth the extra cash. But I've only had good experiences with DF Grinders and will always recommend them.
How long have you had it for? How has the motor held up so far?
Mine is about 5 years old. Still works perfectly. I mostly grind light roasts for espresso, which are much harder on the grinder. The burrs gave up and I upgraded to SSP burrs, but the motor still runs strong.
I've had it for about a year now with no problems. I got it used though so I'm not sure how long it's been running.
The availability of many different 64mm burrs to upgrade the DF64 would make it much more appealing to me.
I've also heard about the DF54 having substantial retention problems.
Different burr sets is the main reason I’d consider the 64 honestly.
As for retention, I believe they’ve been solved with later versions from what I’ve read. it’s got all the same anti static tech as the bigger models now.
Why so $$$?
That’s actually very reasonable for a flat burr grinder. Flat burr grinders aren’t cheap.
