So weird that you never hear "my right-wing children cut me off because I think gay people deserve rights, so now I'm suing them!"

I can 1000% guarantee they got an explanation, they just didn't like it and had no interest in addressing it.

Just checked, they nuked the comments section. 0 listed now. Did anyone think to archive or screenshot any?

Edit: comments are back now, not sure what happened originally

Voting for Trump helped me reduce my holiday food bill. It also helped me clean out my Facebook friends list free of charge. 🇺🇲

I took a brief look at the comment section. Now that is the definition of internet toxicity.

I did get a good laugh at the idiots saying "cut off their inheritance!" The millions that my parents have now in no way, change my mind about contacting them. You couldn't pay me enough to put up with their bullshit.

I'm no-communication with my parents for the summer. I love them but they really are deeply dysfunctional and it rubs off on me when I interact with them.

I am no-communication with my parents for 10 years now.

Next time I see them, I plan to do a little jig on their graves.

"Experts" in being cut out of your children's lives? I bet the "experts" aren't advising people in this situation to reconsider the morality of their stance on the topics and their behavior that led to such a strong response by their children.

I got curious enough to read the article, and the very first number one thing is....

"Before attempting a reconciliation with an estranged parent or adult child, Blake said the first priority should be stabilizing oneself. "What I tend to recommend first is to get that person stable, have healthy habits and build a community," he advised. "Good mental health practices are really important.""

In other words the very first thing to do if your kids cut you out of their lives is cheer yourself up about it and find community in people who share your political and societal beliefs and may be in the same situation. Of course. That way they can reaffirm their political views, hatred for the gays, and agree that it's awful that libral commie terrorists have brainwashed the kids.

In other words

every time you use the phrase "in other words", you need to be really careful if it is still the original message in other words, or if you are trying to spin in to something they did not say so it is easier for you to attack it -> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straw_man

these poor creatures are often result of having no other people around them, so they fall into some internet rabbit hole full of shit. and in that case, finding real people who can help to ground you in reality, and "stabilize yourself", eg. get back to real world, is not bad advice.

of course it does not work if you find some similar assholes to pat each other on your back, but that doesn't necessarily invalidate the advice.

Yes, thank you, I'm sure Fox News has only the best of intentions and wishes for all of their older viewers whose children have cut them off due to their political and social views to reevaluate those views and change for the better.

"What I tend to recommend first is to get that person stable, have healthy habits and build a community. Good mental health practices are really important.

IDGAF who this is coming from, this is actually really solid advice after any relationship breaking up.

Faux News has been the propaganda arm of the Republican party since its inception, so yeah no surprise here.

really? 16 minus 10 is not 6? care to elaborate, or were you just missing at school the day you did subtraction?

You did your subtraction very well, but why you subtracted one number from the other, and the conclusion that it meant anything at all, was wrong.

Let's look at a simple example. Two parents have five children together. The three eldest children are estranged from the mother. That means that 50% of the parents are estranged from a child, and 60% of the children are estranged from a parent.

Following the logic of your post, you'd subtract 50 from 60 and get 10. Okay...exactly what would this 10 represent? You seem to think that it would say something meaningful about 10% of the parents, which is nonsensical.

i see what you are trying to say and it makes theoretical sense, however, this is not a survey on the complete population. this was online poll on a sample of ~4400 people.

there would have to be impossibly huge number of siblings in that random sample so the difference could be explained that way.

say we simplify the sample to 2200 parents and 2200 kids. 220 parents (10% will say they are estranged from their kid).

estrangement is symmetric relation, so you should get the same answer from ~220 kids, but the poll got that answer from 220*1.6 = 352 kids. that would be 132 kids having sibling in that group of 220. in a random sample of 4400, that is just not possible (if the sample is truly random).

some parents are so delusional they don't even realize their kids are not talking to them is much more logical explanation.

No, and the sample size isn't terribly relevant. Yes, you could create a sample for which your conclusion was true, but it would hardly be the only possible set, or even the most likely.

As for symmetry, you seem to be ignoring the fact that for each mother or father, the relationship between parent and child is (potentially) one-to-many. Each parent can have many children. Therefore, many children can report estrangement to a single parent. This is one reason the numbers don't match. Of course, things could go the other way, for example, where one child is estranged from two parents.

The relationship is not as symmetric as you suggest.

well, we don't have details to reach a conclusion, so i conclude this debate ;)
