What are the indicia of thinking/contemplating something?

Is asking questions one if its based on some gap in your understanding and the motivation is understanding the "punchline"?

Thats the only one coming to mind, im curious about it because i almost cant seperate thinking from manipulating some external object or device or tool or a stepping stone of some sort

Thinking rocks of some kind, not necessarily device

Eyes rotating up, looking up. Not for longer pondering, but more for "accessing information". So, when asked a question, people will often glance up and maybe a bit to one side for a second or two before answering.
