If that fridge is still happily running then be happy, they literally don't make them like that anymore.

It's low on refrigerant and effectively unfixable. Depending on where you're at you can probably withhold rent by putting it in an escrow account until the landlord fixes the problems. You have to tell them by certified mail, and if appliances aren't included in your rent agreement don't do it because you're already screwed. In that case get your own fridge and keep the receipt.

Freon is a brand name not a refrigerant. You mean R12 which was banned in new equipment 32 years ago. It's probably R22.

Isn't freon one of the more efficient refrigerants we have? The environmental concerns aren't a problem until it goes into a landfill.

Have you sincerely and cheerfully wished your multibillion dollar corporation landlord a happy and prosperous birthday, and have you gratefully and bravely remitted no less than three (3) months of your (useless to you) money?

No?

You’re what’s wrong with society.

New fridges are a joke anyway. Mine broke after 5 years. I have a garage fridge better then my new one

5

That's why none kf these kids are getting any houses. They really called this upon themselves

I didn't know until now that there is a debate about tipping your landlord. For me this sounds unbelievable. It's like tipping your politicians and policemen. Or in another way like tipping your mum.

Do NOT be kind to your landlord.

My landlord lost their house gambling so I offered them to rent one of my rooms at discount as a roommate.

Now whenever my rent increases due to cost of living, I increase their rent due to cost of living.

We are in a sick perpetual cycle and both our rents went up 5000% yesterday. We are comrades in this pain and promised to protect each other if liver selling operation goes wrong.

It's a hateful bond, an adversarial friendship, and a dying survival. Somebody please help!

I think that means you raised the GDP of your block by 500x. You two make a pretty good team! You should both get some kind of medal for driving such economic growth.

Edit: hang on a second, is your landlord Larry Ellison?

Now that I think about it, if a circle exists somewhere where A rents to B, B rents to C, and C to A (make it as long as needed, of course), one increasing the rent leads to a perpetual rent increase until one of them collapses? Would be funny to see tbh.

7

Lol spot on! This is exactly how the current economy is working 🙈

6

Well, imagine this, but A is also loaning the money to C to keep the circle going, and you've got the state of the "AI" market.

And people are yet still convinced "it's not a bubble".

Our landlord wanted us to pay for the ac being fixed...during the hottest part of July.

You could be on fire in front of me, and I'd piss on you. Tell me you're a landlord and I'll need the first month and last month deposit first.

Piss would be too good for them. I'd just get some marshmallows and sticks out

Wouldn't the pee just make the fire burn harder and be gross too and an insult? I feel like it is worse.

The gross bit sure, but from my understanding pissing on them would help put them out due to piss being mostly water

3

Yes, from my understanding it is usually not a good idea to pour water on non so small fires. but it kinda depends on the amount of water and how you do it.

1

Oh it gets better. The hurricane that ripped through Georgia a year or so back ripped up our fence. They wanted us to keep it there until they could find someone to put it up.

It was rotted and no one wanted to do it...they were gonna keep a rotted fence on the ground in our yard.

I don't know about you, but Georgia got some bad snakes. I broke that bitch down, built a fire pit and burned it. They can marinate my family jewels if they think I'd keep a snake den in my back yard with my 6 yr old.

My last landlord put a clause in the lease that made me responsible for any sewer line repairs. I was like what the fuck is this? He said it was because tenants tend to flush shit you shouldn't flush and that's why sewer lines need to be replaced. To his credit (sort of) he took that out when I said no way I was signing. He was a member of that species of landlord that just puts whatever into leases because some people will sign anything.

The one thing he did that I liked which surprisingly does not seem common in rental leases was to require me to purchase and maintain renter's insurance. Not because he gave a shit about my stuff being stolen or lost in a fire (which renter's insurance covers) but because it's a source of coverage in the event of damage caused to the place by the renter. It was only like $15 a month so hardly a big deal.

2

Every apartment I've ever lived in requires renters insurance. It's so cheap that I'd argue it's a good idea to have regardless of whether required by the building. So many things are out of your control (floods, fire, weather damage, etc) and it's good to know that with the insurance you'd at least he able to get new stuff to maintain a similar living situation.

Only when you're selfish.

Come to think of it, if being selfless is a burden to you then you aren't really selfless.

I guess they don't see the sacrifices people make for their rent money

Tbh I thought it was just some meme made by landlords, for landlords, with landlords, from landlords and that kind of stuff.

My first landlord gave me a plank to hold the door shut so he didn't have to repair the lock and another plank to put over the hole in the bathroom floor that you could fall through to the foundations.

'Safe' living.

whaat, yall adapted that word at some point and just dropped it again?! Freaking shame, native english speakers have a very funny way of pronouncing the "sch" sound.

That spelling of entrepreneur is something else.

5

Oh got it, so it's intentional. Most of my Youtubing is about motorcycle offroad adventuring so I wasn't aware.

3

I incorrectly read your statement as supporting landlords, saying they're entrepreneurs

The bizarre spelling of it in the picture passed me by

Landlords should really rebrand to something like building consurvitours.

4

“Land owners”

No more or less is needed.

Conservators

is stupid and wrong.

How much would you expect back if you gave someone a loan for $500,000.00 after 3 years, 5years, 10years?

Calculations:

After 3 years: 500,000×(1+0.0430⋅3)=500,000×1.129=564,500.
After 5 years: 500,000×(1+0.0438⋅5)=500,000×1.219=609,500.
After 10 years: 500,000×(1+0.0468⋅10)=500,000×1.468=734,000.

Ok so 64,500/3/12=$1792.00 would be your fair monthly rent since the landlord would put that money away and expect a return for that investment.

For 5 years it would be $3,042.

For 10 years it would be $6500. Clearly a better investment.

Except that when they get your rent they can put that money into the investment system again and get much more money overtime.

First month say 1000 (super cheap tent on a cardboard box behind a Wendy's).

Second month 2040 assuming 4% per month.

$41,000 after 3 years, $67,000 after 5 years, 170,000 after 10 years at 4.3% APR.

If the rent was 3000, that would be $510,000 after 10 years. This is not a good investment if you paid $900,000 for that house. You want the return in 5 years so the rent would be $5708.00 per month.

And that right there is why our rent is so expensive. We are basically ensuring the profit of a nice steady percentage to some investor. Now, if you didn't ever invest in the house, your house would eventually become land. So you do want to pay to keep that thing looking good, but maybe not 4.3% per month?

What in the world are you talking about? The rent only paying for the interest? You know buildings are not eternal, right? They depreciate in value. They have maintenance costs. And a hundred other things a good landlord should be taking care of.

2

This is panda level... No, sun... No, koala! Bear minimum. Yeah, you start thinking about maintenance, depreciation, dog damage, robot attacks, invasion by aliens, heck... A pandemic! Now we're talking serious money. Lol.. Not lol.

My old landlord was a Vietnamese family who built an apartment complex for a family business instead of running a restaurant. I respected them, they kept the place in running order.

I feel like "landlord" is an easy group to hate, but some renters are absolutely filthy gross and I have seen what landlords sometimes deal with. No room for nuance here, of course, but how you do things matters a lot.
