EDIT: that's actually from 1980 The Return of the King, by the same studio, and also pretty awesome and better than the live-action counterparts.
Another fun fact about those two movies: they were animated by a Japanese studio called Topcraft. Topcraft would later animate another movie called Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, and shortly after was renamed Studio Ghibli after a change in ownership.
That's awesome, the Ghibli aesthetic has always reminded me of the old Hobbit but I had no idea they were from some of the same people!
It needs more Leonard Nimoy.

HARD disagree. Jackson's orij trij is a modern masterpiece, and the 1980 animated one is...well, it's something, I guess.
Agreed, but the fan edit which cut out the garbage and only included scenes that were actually in the book is pretty good. You can find a copy of it on the interwebz.
It might be better than having to watch all the movies but it's not good... it feels very rushed.
The real unpopular opinion would've been if you said you preferred Bakshi's LotR to Jackson's.
The best LotR is Soviet LotR.
Just don't watch the follow up sequel. It's unbelievably awful.

I tend to agree overall.
That being said, I think the real problem with the live action movie is that it got padded for time in bad ways, but neglected original material to do so. Had they just stuck to the book, the live action would be as good or better than the animated 77 movie.
The soundtrack thing is a matter of taste, though I tend to err on your side with this.
CGI though? Eh, it's not a bad thing when done well. I don't think its use in the live action was a worse idea than the rotiscope "original", but it sure as hell wasn't executed as it should have been. Because it was done poorly, the rotoscope ends up looking miles better.
