Ortega says Nicaragua will no longer hold elections

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/49691588

July 20 (Reuters) - Nicaragua's long-serving president Daniel Ortega said the Central American country will no longer hold elections, eliminating the possibility of an electoral challenge when his term ends next year and further ‌entrenching the rule he shares with his wife.

Ortega, who has continuously held power since 2007 following an earlier presidential term in the 1980s, said the move will close off any path to the opposition, although he did not provide details about carrying out the measure.

Ortega and Murillo's government has been accused by the U.N. Human Rights Council of transforming the country "into an authoritarian state" and systematically violating human rights.

Glances at neighboring Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala

shrugs

Isn't that just how we're running Latin American countries now?

Pretty much true, I'm not so sure about the trade relations but I know that racism against Asians and Chinese people is not really a thing in Latin America, specially because there is a love for Korean stuff like BTS and K-dramas.

What's going on in Honduras and Guatemala? Looks like each of those presidents were elected for their first term recently.

New Report on Honduras’s 2025 Elections Finds that Partisan Gridlock, US Interference, Procedural Irregularities, and Technical Deficiencies Undermined Their Legitimacy

Threats to the Guatemalan electoral process

Different branches of the Guatemalan State, including the executive, much of the legislature, the Supreme and Constitutional Courts, and the Attorney General’s office - all deeply compromised with organized crime – are using this period to prevent President-elect Arévalo from taking office. These measures include the disbarring of the Semilla party, actions against Guatemala’s Electoral Tribunal, the invention of legal cases and efforts to remove the legal immunity of the president, vice-president elect and congressional representatives from Semilla to try them under dubious charges, such as expressing support in social media for student pro-democracy protests.

Another US/Israel vs Russia proxy war

It was a only a matter of time before Nicaragua hit headlines with it now being the last functionally standing member of the Venezuela/Cuba/Nicaragua troika. With Venezuela it was the oil, with Nicaragua it looks like it's the gold mining that was added to a massive list of US sanctions from 2022

Choked by sanctions like the others and seeing what happened to Venezuela I'm not surprised they have ended elections, ramped up defence and last year started making military agreements with Moscow

Give it a few months and the Ortegas will be in US prisons or dead

In a 234-page report, the UN Group of Human Rights Experts on Nicaragua revealed structures of systematic repression that quelled anti-government protests that erupted in 2018 and left at least 350 dead and hundreds detained.

The [54] officials named [in the report] "played key roles in arbitrary detentions, torture, extrajudicial executions, persecution of civil society and the media, denationalization campaigns, and the confiscation of private property," a statement accompanying the report said.

This has nothing to do with Israel, the US, or Russia. This a dipshit dictator who's shamelessly grabbing power

I've noticed the usual BurgerReich propaganda machine has kicked into overdrive, along with Western credulity.

How much power does he hold? Is this like trump saying something but still has to have the congress and courts sign off or is it a done deal?

Latin America seems to oscillate between Left dictators and Right dictators. I know nothing of Nicaraguan history or politics but I hate seeing old farts like these just refusing to roll over an die.
