I never understood why it was so common for parents to say this. I even remember my parents saying it. Making funny faces is one of life's simple joys

My best guess is they thought it would reflect poorly on them as parents, and their image is more important to them than their childrens' happiness. Certainly the case with my parents, at least.

yeah... that and part of them cant stand to see their children experience the simple joy that they were denied. my parents are just large children who passed their abuse onto me without thinking.

They said it to you because their parents said it to them. They grew up with it being normal to say that. It was just a thing you said to kids because it was kind of funny to scare / confuse them a little.

Agreed, but that's how it's always felt the older generations were operating to me. An "it's tradition, that makes it ok" kind of thing. They never really considered the consequences.

I don't get it, did she never make a funny face ever again??? Who would do that

It took me growing up a lot myself to realize, man, our parents were real assholes and nut cases. They had no problem passing on generational traumas apparently and I take a hard stand on not passing it myself.
