He only failed his world. Any talk about him losing his world is metaphorical, like a person losing a pet or loved one will say it's their world.

I might be misremembering but didn't Wolverine say that he refused to wear the X-Men suit, didn't want to be part of their representation of mutants. Then one night he went off drinking alone, while he was gone all the X-Men were killed by humans who hated mutants (thus losing his world, the world he cared about). When he got back and saw what happened he went on a murder rampage. Not just revenge but a lot of innocent lives too (thus failing the world). That's why he wears the suit now. To remind himself of what he lost, what he did, and to never do it again.

::: spoiler I really like that they didn't go with the darker but rooted in comics storyline of (spoiler) Wolverine being affected by illusions (e.g Wanda) to kill the x-men. It's good for them to keep it simple and original/distinct. :::

also mind control wouldn’t have been “him”, that’s a common trope in comics that is usually forgiven to get allegiances back to the status quo. this way it was fully his fault which he has to reckon with.
