It boggles my mind every time I stumble upon news from the mountain bike world and see the pricing.

Same. I got my mountain bike on sale for $650 and added an ebike conversion kit to it for another $200. Works great.

I get why mountain bikes are expensive. Strong frames, suspension, components that still work when subjected to mud and snow, wide rims that can take hits, complex tire tread patterns.

What do you get going from a $1500 road bike to a $5000-$10000 road bike? Weight savings less than the weight of a good poop, and tiny aerodynamic improvements that do not matter unless you are fast enough that your team is buying your bike for you. Oh, and electronic shifting for some reason?

Because road bikes are going for weighing as little as possible, so they're often made with a lot of engineering and expensive materials.

Practically speaking, the gains you get from ultra high end road bikes is negligible unless you're competing professionally or something, but there's also just people out there with tons of money and want the best of the best. Most people would be more than fine with an old steel frame and some quality tires though.

At some point, maybe the bicycle industry will adopt the Airbus convention of just adding letters after the model number. Ref: A350ULR, A320neo
