Sweeney is such a dishonest and corrupt piece of shit, a very typical retrograde American oligarch.

Corrupt:

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2026/03/google-and-epic-look-to-bury-the-hatchet-with-new-app-store-settlement/

That's just the annoying American style of corruption (I say this as someone who is not American but who has lived in North America for ~10 years).

Dishonest:

https://www.thegamer.com/tim-sweeney-grok-controversy/

Specifically:

This is a vile lie by PC Gamer. I criticized a government official for pressuring Apple and Google to block a speech app owned by their political opponent, deplatforming 500,000,000 users on the pretense of stopping a small number of users from distributing disgusting content.

This is clear bullshit aimed at local (i.e. American) degenerates.

When Elon Musk went on a crusade against texty (a tiny Ukrainian new source), did genuine free speech believer Tim Sweeney care? Of course not, because American polemics about alleged beliefs in "free speech" are lies.

I am not a Valve fanboy.

They are only sort of OK when viewed in comparison to other American technology oligarch groups. I even hesitate to use the term "OK" in this context.

Valve is the best gaming company, who has a storefront (and even consoles / systems to sell). All other suck in comparison and I think Valve is good for the entire gaming industry and the gamers.

Your first comment came off like, really not how you wanted IMO.

Your first comment sounds like you're mocking people: it reads as if you're parroting a valve fanboy who thinks Gabe is awesome simply because they've been brainwashed to think that and not because of valid reasons.

20

A rare inverse example of Poe’s law in action - a statement so lacking in nuance that everyone is assuming it to be sarcastic.

26

No, that's not what I meant. Tim is bad and Gaben is good in my opinion.

7

This is really weird, I read this comment chain a month ago I feel like. But it was posted today?

Indeed. Even stuff like their casino side business with CS skins seems to be often downplayed.

1

It's funny because originally I didn't understand how it was different and when it was explained to me in a factual way I did understand and changed my view and people really don't like that.

You don't have to like Gaben to see that Tim is much worse. Tim only cares about business. That's why Epic store is great for publishers and developers and dogshit for customers, because Tim doesn't see you as nothing more than cattle. Your interests don't matter, you're just a vessel to extract money from. You can dislike Gaben all you want but Valve at least treats you like a customer.

There is no such thing as a good billionaire and to say otherwise is just lickspittle behavior. Gabe does not care about you.

3

As said, everyone has their own opinion what constitutes to "good" and "bad".

2

Destiny 2 died BECAUSE of soulless, maligned, pathetic, ignorant, coward, contrived, boring, corrupt, greedy, pussy, dick, anus farts like Sweeney. Epic belongs in the fucking grave.

scribe.disroot.org

If there were anyone who needed to hire a PR firm to handle all of their public-facing communications, Tim Sweeney is it, because every time I read a news article that starts "Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney Says...", it is always (from my memory, at least) the dumbest and/or most infuriating bullshit you've ever heard from someone who is, notionally, supposed to sell customers on their products or services.

What a dog shit take damn

Even someone who likes AI knows games don't write themselves.

I'm really trying to think if his comments are aimed at investors for bringing in new funding and consolidate AI games on his platform but even he should know that just makes him the AI guy people don't wanna associate with. It's puzzling that I don't get the strategy here.

hey now but what if I want my code to be like

if gun.is_valid and not gun == null and gun.id != null:
        shoot()

  func shoot():
         fire(gun):

    func fire(gun):
if gun.is_valid and not gun == null and gun.id != null:
                   weapon_activate(gun)

Why... why are these nested.... owwww my brain.

Oh my god. Its soo bad, it keeps getting worse the more I look at it...

I hate you but also, well done.

6
sh.itjust.works

haha, it's actually from experience of trying to undo what AI did to my code. And I'm just a casual hobbyist in scripting languages.

I still have a to-do to unstick how it is using a lambda to set a bool value inside a dict with only one key, when any normal human would just do

  bool_var = my_func()

  def my_func()
       [code goes here]
        if x:
             return true
        else:
              return false

it's really been a lesson in how I can't even use AI to learn, let alone actually produce.

5

Lately I've been running into this wild thing where... they just cannot fucking understand nested arrays.

Here, we have an array called points, its made of vec2s, vec2 elements can also be accessed as an array or via vec2.x or vec2.y

Alright, now, figure out how to compute the distance from the last point in the points array to the first point.

.... and it will give me something like:

points - points

... and then I headdesk and explain to it what i just said.

and it will go oh!

points - points is incorrect!

points - points is the corrected version!

... and then i will tell it those are literally the same thing and cannot possibly be both correct and incorrect simultaneously.

... and then it will either actually crash, or basicslly say 'yep, sorry, im stupid'... and then crash.

........ fucking what? This is what Ford has been using to make all their software with the last year?

God fucking damnit.

They really must have actually scaled them back in some way, to just stupider models... 6 months ago... they could handle that no problem, and get tripped up on legitimately more complex things.

... oh well, im never gonna directly pay for any of this shit anyway.

2

to think, all this mad scrabbling for AI right as people are galvanizing against it's outsized costs and complete lack of a useful endgame. Great timing Timmy.

7

"Tim Sweeney claims that the technology he is behind will be a cure-all. Somehow reporters think that a CEO backing their own business venture is newsworthy."

34

Tim Sweeney can get fucked. Every time he opens his mouth, a bunch of vile bullshit spews out.

33
lemmy.ml

Being a CEO is so easy a job, even the brain-dead can do it!

30

Ugh, once again Tim Sweeney is being not only disingenuous, but also letting shit spill from his mouth. His desperation knows no bounds. If only people would just mock this idiot more.

24

Tim Sweeney? The Tim Sweeney who argued that Roblox wasn't a platform used by pedophiles to groom minors and exploiting child labor laws? That Tim Sweeney?

23

Has Tim Weeny ever thought that maybe he should just shut the fuck up?

17

Man... Sweeney is starting to go from 'contemptible' to 'pitiable'.

That is such a desperate and obviously stupid thing to say that I do actuslly just feel sad for him at this point.

17

I don't know what his point is. That we can mass produce slop for the lowest common denominator without needing to pay anyone? I legitimately don't understand who he thinks he's talking to! None of the players who would be fine with slop are listening (by definition), and he can talk to his rich buddies without the bad PR. And those are the only two groups who could possibly stand to benefit from what he's suggesting.

16

Too bad Epic is kept alive by children buying skins and silly dances who aren't old enough to care about how sick that company has become

16

He keeps shooting himself in the foot and all of his other parts of his body at this point

7

It's hilarious watching these rich CEOs try to tow this narrative on their own and failing. LLMs have limited usefulness and we all know it.

15

Attend the tale of Sweeny Tim,

His dick was small and his mind was dim.

I tot Destiny 2 died because it's just repetitive and people moving on. AI adding the same shit will not save anything, but accelerate it.

13
jordanlundreply
lemmy.world

Destiny 2 died because the studio was more interested in chasing F2P microtransactions than story content.

They cut the paid story content so they could go F2P, then the new players had no idea what was going on or how to engage.

What they SHOULD have done was this:

Fork Destiny 2 into 2 games, each balanced separately. A) PvE Paid Story Content B) F2P PvP microtransactions.

Let the same character bounce from one to the other.

9

This guy nailed it. I'm one of the players who came back for MoT / bought the everything collection. I've been playing through the content after the Europa story, and the game's quality tanked after Final Shape. Final Shape is GREAT - campaign is fun & interesting, new location has tons of new activities with lots of secret content, and prismatic is a cool new way to build your character.

But then Edge of Fate comes along, and Bungie very clearly cheaped out and cut all kinds of corners. The story dialogue is nonsense and half of the interactions are literally just text boxes over static characters, Fallout-style. They didn't even bother to record voice work. The campaign level design to a nose dive where they clearly just decided to throw a billion enemies at you rather than create interesting encounters.

Renegades is a little better from a writing perspective, but all of the other corner-cutting problems persist.

4

The Monument of Triumph update shows that people still WANT to play Destiny. The people in charge were too busy siphoning money away from the game to fund (way too many) other projects, a new building, and cars, just to name a few things.

6
sh.itjust.works

Destiny died for me the moment they started taking away content I paid for. Destiny was at its peak at the end of D1. The expansions were good, the events were fun, they found a rhythm. Then the beginning of D2 was a big step back and we had to figure it all out again.

10

I could write an entire essay on how disappointed I was with D2. I gave it a shot around the time they started sweeping the old content under a rug. I would've been so angry if I had bought into it at launch

2

Oh please do! We certainly need a purge on AAA studios releasing shit. I'm sure if they let the AI make the next cod it will be a triumph. They'll make a note saying HUGE SUCCESS.

8
lemmy.world

I like AI or more specifically, LLMs. I find them useful in a mundane sort of way.

And I can tell you that AI would not have saved Destiny 2, a game that's been out for nine years, from the poor and greedy decisions made by Bungie and Sony.

Destiny 2 declined because of bad leadership. Nothing more. There was nothing philosophically or technically wrong with the game itself.

8

Destiny 2 declined because of bad leadership.

Maybe Sweeney meant that even an LLM would have made better decisions than current leadership? :D

1

Well offer PlayStation money for the studio and see if they say yes

No point telling us until you are in a position to do something

8
lemmy.world

I know Tim Sweeney drives an Orange McLaren up vote this if you like me to key it …

7

In one way, he's right, but that's probably not what meant either.

What he probably thinks: AI could have done most of the creative work for a new expansion.

What would have actually helped: AI could have helped convert the old expansions and main quest to the new formats used, such that the WHOLE DAMN GAME was actually available to everyone again.

5

I mean the destiny 2 gameplay loop is just repetitive reiteration variations on a theme, it's the perfect vehicle for ai

5

How about this moron try using it to keep Unreal Tournament going first and see how that goes?

4

Dont you fucking dare introduce generative ai in one of my favourite games

2

I mean... I feel like AI probably couldn't have done a worse job than Bungie did with some of those expansions...

2

Humans offloading the decisions to a bot that's trained on bad decisions?

2

Go for it Tim! Go all in, really doesn't affect me.

Crack on mate we'll see what happens.

1

Can someone check on Mr Sweeny. I'm Serious. I think he is showing cult like behavior for an industry that is due to implode any day now.

1

No. The Exos were human minds downloaded into Android bodies.

Rasputin, a massive AGI was self aware and empathic. It could splinter its own mind into smaller AGIs as well if necessary. They killed it right before the final chapter of the light and dark saga. (This isn't a spoiler since you can't play any of this content ever again.)

Man... Destiny lore was freaking amazing. The way Exos came into being was a whole novel on its own.

1

Counterargument:

The problems with Destiny 2 had to do with decisions made for shock factor/profitability that completely ignored what players actually enjoyed about the game.

AI does not have the ability to understand or make decisions about what players actually like. It is reliant on the parameters input by humans and those humans already have made a bunch of bad decisions that killed the game.
