Have I reached “old”? I don’t understand any of this.

The joke is it's "rags to riches" because she went from driving her mom's Porsche (a luxury sports car brand) to having her own special ordered Porsche. If they've got a Porsche the only rags they've seen are the ones they use so they don't have to touch poor people

I appreciate it, but you re-explained the parts that I did understand. Who is this Jennie? Why does their parent have a porche? Who's the person commenting (in the event that it matters vs just some random internet person)./

Since this seems to be about a singer (not that I knew, it's in the comments), I guess they refer to before their first album release or something like that.

Honestly, it doesn't really matter, the joke works without knowing who it is. But it looks like this was the singer "Jennie" from a Korean Girl Group called Blackpink. A lot of these groups will swap out members to keep the fame and fans of the group but allow talent to move on/retire, looks like Jennie is a new member and she's doing so well because she was able to order her own Porsche. Yay for Jennie pulling herself up by her gold inlaid bootstraps.

I was curious about the family connection. Was the mother already rich/famous? It implies the subject didn't buy her mom the first car, so I assume so. The wikipedia linked didn't have anything for a ctrl+f on 'mother'

1

She means selecting the option package and the rims..

Building? Does that refer to customizing the build?

7

I was going to say, neither looks like a classic Porsche, so the odds it was actually built are minimal

I...don't understand this sentence at all

"Jennie is my favorite member of BlackPink, but I dislike being a fan of this group because the fan culture is so toxic"

I did have to look up 'bias' to make sure I was using it right. Kpop fandom is... it's own little microcosm of slang and conceptual worldviews. Very weird phenomenon to look into, I highly recommend it.

Isn’t it just bronies that moved from Japan to Korea?

17

Oh no, it's way bigger than the bronies ever were. BTS ARMY (the group name for the fans of the group BTS) (depending on source) either equals or exceeds the Swifties (taylor swift fans) in sheer numbers. It's nuts.

Edit: BTS alone is projected to be responsible for fully ~0.5% of SK's GDP

What do you think bronies are? That question makes so little sense to me, I don't even know where to start.

4chan incels. You know the type. Anime, basements and body odor.

And they're bronies, you say? What were they doing in Japan?

2

I still have no idea what the fuck anyone is saying! I can't tell if something important is happening or if if this is just a conversation between 3 people who had massive strokes

Jennie (an Idol) is my Bias (Favourite Idol) from BP (the group names Blackpink), but this fandom (another word for fan base) is a prison (a place of holding prisoners, used here metaphorically)

13
lemmy.world

I'm taking it to mean Jennie is the name of their favorite butt plug (BP) and it destroys their rectum (deadass), but they can't fully enjoy it because they're locked up in one of those genital cages (this fandom is a prison). Must be some weird edging kink.

It's so refreshing to see somebody who is savvy in young-speak.

15
lemmy.world

All the Blackpink members come from wealthy families. I don’t know why people keep trying to portray them as self-made🥴

58

Delusional fans who think their idols made it through sheer talent and work ethic. Sure, there are some who actually come from ordinary working-class families, but this particular group is far from it and one of the worst to use as an example.

ikrrrrr, and it’s not just BP, most k-pop stans wanna make their Biases look self made/like them, which is literally like so parasocial

I thought I knew what the word bias meant but I'm not so sure anymore.

Translated:

"I agree wholeheartedly, and I'd further say that it's not a phenomenon limited to Blackpink; most of the superfans of any K-pop group will insist that they have a great deal in common with their favorite member of the group, and that said member got to their position of fame & fortune through hard work and talent alone [presumably without any unfair advantages like being born into wealth]. This results in an extremely one-sided relationship between performer and fans, where the fans feel a personal relationship with the performer where none could possibly exist"

What is the main demographic of this fandom?

I'd guess it's mostly young, easily influenceable boys from poorer surroundings and with a not yet refined taste in music. "Refined" not meant condescending but in the sense of diversification: "I know 5 movies. Those are the greatest movies ever!". And "I now know 50000 movies. Those 5 10/10 from before are now the worst 5 movies ever".
