Tried a different painting method to try and capture the density of the fog. I also added a character not in the reference image in an attempt to ground us in the scene. Thoughts?

Pretty good! I like how it conveys hazy fog in the foreground but dense impenetrable fog in the distance.
That's what drew me to the reference! Felt peaceful but creepily quiet at the same time.
Now you mention it, it has a bit of a Silent Hill vibe :D

The desaturation is effective. I have less of a desire to eat this one compared to most of your work.
I often think back to that delicious ocean you made.
It's a different style for are. I normally like bright happy images, but not always.

Oh odd that you see it that way. I can usually tell when it is your art that is posted. Which I'd say is me noticing your style.
Like you're definitely playing around with different subjects and lighting and stuff, but there is a collection of characteristics that I imagine you'd have to pretty thoughtfully subvert to throw me off of noticing you.
