The horror here is using that knife to cut onions.

Get a proper chef's knife, hell a cheap Victorinox you find in any commercial kitchen is like $20

I usually use a butter knife, is that not the proper way to do it?

protip: if you cut along the 'grain' of the onion instead of against it, you'll be able to get a thinner slice and it will make you cry less. Cutting against the grain is better for salads or uncooked onion imo

keep in mind none of that really applies to using a serrated blade...

Obviously.. I would normally use a butterknife, but I thought.. perchance.. the serrated might make me seem fancy?

I only have one left hand so I use my other hand to prepare onions like this. | Spyke
