TLDR: the article implies it was Fungi.
That's the obvious answer. That's what it does. I was hoping for some kind of zombie or alien rancher, but I guess fungii makes more sense.
I mean fungi are kinda like a liminal space between life and death so they're about as close to zombies we're gonna get.
