Don't know where else to post this but I was getting ready to cook dinner (sloppy joes) and found this absolutely massive clove of garlic.

Can of coke for scale as I have larger than average hands.

Edit: It's elephant garlic. I am a stupid 🙃

That's pretty good! I've used larger -- not counting elephant garlic -- but that one's up there among some of the greats!

That’s a big one. The largest I’ve seen is a bulb of garlic that was just one clove.

It never occurred to me that garlic could just not separate when growing like this.

A whole bulb being one solid piece would be interesting to see

Apparently there’s a variety that always does that called solo garlic.

Y'know I just went and looked at the package and that's exactly what happened lmao

Reminds me of the person who bought a carton of double yolk eggs without realizing and thought they just kept getting lucky 😅

They should have "sideshow tents" at farmers markets that are just full of double yolked eggs & elephant garlic.. maybe a few giant gourds or a potato that looks like Bill Burr.

That would actually make me more inclined to go to one.

Despite being a professional cook my whole life I don't know near as much about vegetables as I should. I know the typical ones obviously but the fact I didn't even know elephant garlic was a thing makes me feel kinda uninformed

Have you considered feeling recently informed? It’s a fun thing to know about! That’s for certain!

Yeah but it just makes me realize how much I don't know and as a lifelong cook I should know.

Problem is I can't learn by reading or videos I need to be shown first hand in person how to do things in order to actually retain the information.

It's a special kind of hell 😭

I was a comin' to say ... looks like a pretty standard sized clove of elephant garlic. Your edit has ruined my sanctimony and robbed me of my sense of superiority over you.

I like elephant garlic, but I don't like the price compared with plain ole run of the mill garlic. But this does give me an idea, maybe I should grow my own elephant garlic this year!

It's a little & fun unknown fact that garlic can eat garlic & become ultra-garlic

Never heard of "aglione"?

Its an italian strain of garlic which is milder (so i think its similar to what you get can get in the USA)

Its very good and much better for some preparations
