Well, Wolfenstein 3D came out a little more than a year before the original Doom. Wolfenstein 3D was the groundbreaking FPS. Doom certainly extended on Wolfenstein 3D, but Wolfenstein 3D was the first. Also Wolfenstein 3D could run on a 286 CPU, while Doom required at least a 386. So the initial audience was larger for Wolfenstein 3D.
I cannot over state what a revolution in gaming playing Doom for the first time was.
The only other things that come close were GTA III, Mario 64, and Ocarina of Time

I'd argue that GoldenEye was as big if not bigger for the future of gaming than either of the other N64 titles.
