Hi everyone!

I’ve just moved over from Reddit after a pretty rough experience there. I’m looking for a friendlier space and would love any tips on how to integrate quickly and make the most of this community.

Happy to be here!

This place requires a bit of curation as to what you subscribe to and block, unless you like back to back Trump and Linux posts, with the occasional tankie propaganda sprinkled in.

Really? Where? Most communities I see are so obsessively upset about the inadequacy of LLMs that it is concerning.

Most technology@* communities. If not saying straight up "ai bad", it's heavily implied in most posts.

I don’t block anything. I just ignore everything other than the communities I’ve subscribed to. Works fine for me. It’s a low maintenance option, since I don’t need to keep blocking new things all the time.

Greetings!

About being more friendlier, if you find some corner of the network you don't like, you can easily block them without losing much. There can always be alternatives. =)

About better integrating, I guess look for communities for stuff you like?

There's also some communities and bots for getting a kickstart on what to follow (bots are for the Tumblr/Twitter-like side of the fediverse):

read through some old threads. if you see someone being aggressive and think you might not want to have a similar encounter block them. it's not a power-move or anything it's just curating your feed.

create the experience you want to have.

I frequently will look at everything, not just what I'm subscribed to or the communities on my instance. I will also sort by what's been at the top in the last 6 hours. Using that method, I've found some good posts in communities that I never would have know to look for... And the I subscribe to them.

Also remember you can block keywords! Under blocks & filters in settings you have a bunch of options. It's a good option for when you feel like people are talking too much about something you're just not interested in.

If you browse the All feed, also don't hesitate to block active communities you have no interest in.

In general I feel it's easier to have a somewhat positive experience here, though there's always trolls everywhere. Standard troll rules apply - block if you feel like it, report if it breaks rules, don't feed.

Welcome! :)
