Do those things actually work? I’m prone to static shocks in the winter and at the office (for some reason), but I don’t want to spend $25 on a wristband that doesn’t work.

They keep you connected to the electrical ground so that YOU don't build up a voltage. But that doesn't mean a built up voltage somewhere else can't go through you. Ideally you wear the strap and you keep the electronics grounded as well while you work so that there's need for charge to move between.
