I don't know all the linguistic terminology, but I remember thorn being pronounced as in the word itself, while adding a sting changed it's pronunciation to be like "then"
In case you’re not terminally online enough to be aware of the Lemmy Discourse^TM^, one user has been persistently using the thorn in otherwise ordinary (or even high quality) comments and it’s made a lot of people very unhappy. This has been enough of a thing that piefed had an instance-optional filter to convert þ->th for a while, though it’s been removed since then.
I think most of the negative reaction to your post is people upset about the thorn specifically rather than your post/comment
