Seems like like this could be rephrased as: people driven into prostitution to avoid starvation.

The way it's phrased is that they added an additional payment method, not that people are turning to prostitution to eat.

Could just be that food is all the Johns have to pay with.

I imagine it's as follows:

  1. Like in almost any society, Zimbabwe has some sex workers
  2. Whole country started to see food shortage/a famine/third party takeover of farmland,
  3. So prostitutes want to be paid directly in crops either because of a recent food scarcity development / because they're... Starting their own farms! Yippee!
22

Maybe they’re radical anti-capitalists doing what they can to move their economy to a barter and trade system?

9

The main reason why people don't want to be paid directly in food is because food is inconvenient or even costly to store and transport, and may not retain its value over time (potential loss to spoilage).

But if your local currency is also inconvenient to store and transfer, and doesn't retain its value over time, maybe food is the better store of value.

Not that I've always gotten as much sex as I wanted, but I've never needed money for it.

It sorta makes sense on overly censored social media platforms but what, that's an article on their own personally managed website? That's bizarre

Advertisers avoid placing ads in controversially named pages. They are likely protecting their income

And it's Zimbabwe, which is like 80 something percent Christian according to Wikipedia, so their cultural mores might be different from more liberal and progressive areas.

And as the Bible says, God is stupid and if you change one letter he doesn't know that you are talking about sex. (Matthew 69:420)

and has tyrannosaurus vision so if you stand perfectly still you can sin all you want

7

Because modern journalism is ad supported, and advertisers don't want their ads next to anything related to sex.

Now all that's needed is a centralized web location to connect those scantily clad ladies seeking corn with those willing to spill their beans.

A cornhub, if you will.

Why are 'beans' and 'corn' in quotes there? Are they euphemisms for something else?

I'm Captain Jenks of the Horse Marines

I feed my whores on corn and beans

I often live beyond my means

I'm a captain in the Army!

And we’ve already had “rest in peace my granny she got hit by a bazooka”

Is anyone else here enough of a 90's kid to remember the TBS show Dinner and a Movie? The theme song for it just popped into my head. Doot, doo do beans and cornbread doot doo do beans and cornbread.

5

Never trust a hooker trying to sell you corn....or....hear me out...Hanna on 35th! She's got the best corn!

5

Might just be a weakness if currency. Or availability crisis. Usually the value of food stuffs is much lower than the service of a prostitute.

The screenshot is way to little information to go in any direction.

4

I like the pictures of corn and peas in the meme in case we can only understand by image

Definitely not, it’s bad for the most vulnerable portion of society to not have access to money. You can’t pay rent or a doctor with corn and beans.

You can pay for prostitutes, which means the situation is dire. Doctors can probably be bargained with in this scenario if you have the beans to pay.

3

oh i don't need one of those i know how it makes me feel. it makes me lymphy. it's why i have the buckets.

I’m old enough to remember a republican Senate candidate getting dragged for suggesting this as an alternative to the ACA.

3

You can. People used to pay in cigarettes, too.

The worth of food being high enough for this to be plausible, that's the issue. Also food has a very stable value.

2

I went down to the corn-chemical exchange bank, and gave em 2 ears a corn, and they gave me 2 beakers a chemicals!
