TBH I still cannot believe there are people using the internet without ad block in 2026

Fun fact: it is trivially easy and costs $0 to track an individual through their ad identifier. They're not supposed to uniquely identify people, but you really just have to drill down like a dozen or so variables and you'll uniquely identify just about anyone with a smart phone.

Hey, random person for whom this describes, are you

-Aged 30-34 -White -Male -Educated -Spends a lot of time near you work address -Spends a lot of time near you home address -Spends some time where you vacation the exact time you usually vacation there -Is a 49ers fan -Likes artisanal coffee -Android user -Listens to late 90s and early 00s metal -Wears pants size 38/32.

Guess what there's like 3 of you in the world. And we can get all 3 ad ids in the real time bidding market and track all 3 of you until we deduce which one is you.

Now I know where any person for whom I perform these steps is located, basically in real time.

It's that bad. It's a well known issue with I guess too much money behind it to fix? Idk.

As long as they are used to spread malware, they are a cybersecurity risk as well.

I think most people on the internet don’t even know what a browser extension is. Most people are not very interested in customizing or tweaking their computer beyond “push this button, stuff I want comes out.”

8

Yeah if we want to post every mildly infuriating ad in the world, we’re going to be here a while.

I sometimes do it on a new machine/browser, and it's like staring into hell

This really is the correct answer. I also beg you to install Ublock origin.

Ghostery was involved in some weird info-selling controversy, weren’t they?

Edit: I looked it up. Yup, they were selling info about the trackers they blocked to the tracking companies they were blocking. So those companies could then figure out how Ghostery was blocking them, and circumvent it.

Apparently after that, they had another controversy where they started inserting ads to show to their users. Somehow that feels even worse, because the users who had it installed were trying to avoid things exactly like that.

Consent-O-Matic is great; essential, in my opinion! Along with uBO, they are the 2 extensions I never use a browser without. (Except when forced to use Edge for some tasks, at work)

4

Privacy badger, it's basically the good ghostery made by the EFF, it just doesn't have any marketing budget lol

Someone came so hard on that AI woman's face that her skin melted straight off.

17

technically it can't be sleep apnea unless it comes from the Apnea Mountains in the Maldives. otherwise it's just sparkling sleep deprivation.

ublock Origin or AdNauseam is the cure to your ailment. Speaking of quality of life improvements any degoogled or privacy oriented browser is also an improvement. Personally I use Zen browser, not as hardened as other browsers but good enough for me and has nice features and design aswell :)

12

How the fuck people don't know about adblockers in 2026 will constantly astonish me.

Ublock origin or the Brave browser is so easy to use

A Møøse once bit my sister ... No realli! She was Karving her initials on the møøse with the sharpened end of an interspace tøøthbrush given her by Svenge - her brother-in-law - an Oslo dentist and star of many Norwegian møvies: "The Høt Hands of an Oslo Dentist", "Fillings of Passion", "The Huge Mølars of Horst Nordfink".

Bare å sende meg meldinger om du ønsker å øve litt og få tilbakemeldinger, jeg hjelper gjerne! 😊

I saw that part first and immediately thought, “Wow, yes, it must be annoying for ads for jewelry to be embedded in your work.” Then I saw the sleep apnea garbage. Until reading the additional info, I was ready to ask, “Which ad?” The way it’s worded sounds like sponsored content.

Also, all the people using ad blockers must also be blocking each other’s comments. Because hot damn, there’s a lot of people saying the same thing. I think OP gets the message, y’all.

Now tell the AI to generate one weird trick and the doctors that don't want us to know about it.

You could just let people make their own decisions without being a giant cunt about it?

We want people to make their own INFORMED decisions about things. Therefore we let them know that brave browser is run by yucky crypto bros.

And it turns out the people who use it are insufferable chodes. Who could have thought.

It’s funny seeing the massive divide between Lemmy and Reddit on Brave. On Reddit, Brave is continuously praised as the go-to browser because they ran a massive astroturfed campaign and got a bunch of redditors to switch. But on Lemmy (where they never ran that astroturfing) Brave is pretty widely hated because the CEO is a piece of shit with a history of doing shady shit.

You can always tell when someone is a recent Reddit refugee, because they’ll mention Brave and immediately get shouted down. And sure enough, the person’s account is only like two weeks old.

11

How recent is this history? Because I remember many years back now something like an AMA or some other post by the CEO of Brave, promoting it ahead of it being released I think and getting a pretty frosty reception on Reddit once people asked a bit more about how it was supposed to work. As time went on the reception seemed only to get worse as rumours spread of crypto scams and dodginess and even just on a basic level, questions of "why would we use this when we could just use Firefox with an ad blocker?"

I get the impression though that Reddit has been changing.

Brave browser is poor man's attempt at firefox, motivated by homophobia (literally)

Holy fucking shit. Are you fuckign losers still on this?

Go back your AI powered, RAM sucking, poor rendering, developer abandoning pile of shit and shut the fuck up.

Bruh I toggled off literally all existing and future AI features with a single toggle on FF, they still need to be opted out one by one on Brave 😭

Sorry bro - I got a little worked up in my work stress. You didn’t deserve my fuck ass response.
