In all seriousness, I believe it's because this complex was made from an office building or other similar commercial structure. They tried to add more classical residential features to make it seem less sterile.
I'm guessing this area was outdoor at one point and it's been renovated to be indoor but they only went as far as adding roof and floor, not really dealing with the stuff between.

Looks like a former prison that has been "renovated".
I was thinking mall/big box store conversion
Put some digital camera noise onto it, fuck up the color balance, then you got a liminal space photograph.
Ah yes, going out on the balcony for a smoke, maybe some sunlight.
…guess I’m a weirdo ‘cause I kinda like this.
I wouldn’t prefer it over an outdoor balcony, but uhh… I dunno, has a sort of backrooms vibe to it.
When we start having colonies in inhospitable places in the solar system this is how I imagine housing might look like.
Or when parts of Earth become inhospitable due to climate change
Hopefully s little cozier though

I feel like they somehow made it worse.
Former prison

I could get behind this if there was any actual decoration or community-oriented furniture in the hallway.
Maybe some fake plants, a bench/sofa, vending machines, etc. Any kind of reason to spend time in the hallway.
Learned a new word today, here we call it "Prison".
“Hey, Florence, lovely weather today.”
Backrooms ahh apartment
I bet it was nice during COVID.
Smoke alarms are a bitch when there's a BBQ, but other than that ...
Virginia Tech - at least so says the video https://youtu.be/3tEoessHiqI
So... we can smoke inside again? Is there any other purpose to balconies?
