All his music is a fun wholesome bop really. He was a Eurovision contestant during covid so his second entry after the shutdown was a love song to his wife for their 10 year anniversary.
Ah man. Always so relevant. Ancient but ever present present.
Listening to this version I think the mastering could be better. The intro is killer and haunting, but the bass is blown out at 1:37. You have to be careful with this song and NOFX always knew that if you listen to the original album version. Its got a point to make and if you take it too lightly you can't make the point. Like I'd really like to hear this without the audience noise and maybe not a full orchestra, just the bass and brass section. The winds and percussion (especially the xylophone) are too light-hearted.
I actually prefer this version over the album version. Sure, the sound could be improved here and there. But it's punkrock in the end. Doesn't need to be perfect.
Yep all women. They've been my gateway into the genre. I've not gotten into it much because I like being able to understand vocals with minimal effort, but I feel like the vocalist in Crypta does a pretty good job at being articulate and it's raised my tolerance enough for me to explore some other bands.
Thanks for the post btw, I've been enjoying some new artists and great classics so far :D
Can't say I have a all-time favourite but my favourite right now is Watch Your Mouth by The Backseat Lovers. I heard it in a cafe yesterday and got hooked on the band.
Hmm. I don't think I've ever tried to decide on a favorite song. I'll have a ponder.
I've been playing this often recently. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zY6RbPaTNUc 5MIINUST x Puuluup - (nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (küll) midagi | Estonia Official Video 🇪🇪
Nor do I! It's something like "we don't know anything about those drugs" but they do and they're hiding from the police. Or something, based on the YouTube comments.
Not bad. I will say that I've come to like much punchier rock music than the classic rock flavour. I could've seen myself enjoying this much more back in my ACDC phase—which wasn't that long ago tbh
The one that pops up in my head is https://.youtube.com/watch?v=5C2LJE2SYfE. And i very much like the meaning "buy strawberries instead of war machines". I wish some high ranking israelies would value this song more (i know that the band was at popular there a decade ago)
(sorry for over explaining, im just anxious but want to share and dont mean harm)
I believe I would've been able to better value this song had i understood its content—I believe that's Hebrew? Unable to interpret the lyrics, i unfortunately have to rate this what i would usually rate songs of this flavour:
Edit: Disclaimer: I don't listen to much English songs so like... you know... pls don't be like "my tastes suck" because I haven't gotten a chance to really explore.
I typically like more punchy rock music, but this one has a strong message and strong MV, so I'll give it a
7/10.
To answer your question, this is wholly dependent on your taste. 'Cool music' is subjective, so i don't want to recommend you anything I listen to. As another comment said, you can look to this thread to see what you may like.
Personally I use Spotify, and I know that the fediverse is generally averse to corporate music streaming platforms—especially them—but those guys never fail to recommend me a song i will like. A lot of my playlist is curated from their recommendations, so I'd also say you can start there.
Algorithms will occasionally turn up cool stuff but the best way is chatting with other folks who enjoy music. The algorithm of Spotify or yt music is often an easier place to find more music like what you already know you like. The more stuff you like, the more likely it is you'll find stuff in common with other people and you can ask them for reccomendations based on what you enjoy :)
But just hearing what other people are really into is a great way to broaden your horizons and hear a bunch of different kinds of cool stuff you wouldn't have found otherwise. I sometimes also like to look up the music that folks show in c/unixporn screenshots or that people mention in YouTube videos :) (oh, and sometimes you'll hear something good as part of the music for a video, movie scoring, etc, thats always cool too)
I can't have a favorite, but man we wore out the newest Fontaines DC album. On that record, the last song is "Favorite". I love it but also love that only a few months after it came out, this guy did an amazing cover of the song, my husband asks me to play this whenever he hears me listening to the original. So- my favorite song called Favorite is:
This was a fantastic listen. Very well done song and fantastic singing from the performer. Just to really appreciate this one, i went ahead and listened to the original, and i must say this version is much better.
I usually like the music more than lyrics, but most of my favorites are lyricals, and this has best of lytrics and the music. there is flute, guitar, indian classic and western stuff all mixed. It is my daily alarm.
It's actually from 2022. I'd call it somewhat new age folk as I know they have an electric violin. Thanks for checking out the song! Love the idea for this post.
Nah, I'd label it extreme progressive metal but not djent. This album is all in standard tuning on standard-range guitars.
For a really clean djent example, Periphery released MAKE TOTAL DESTROY around the same time that Ne Obliviscaris released Portal of I. The word "djent" actually comes from the sound of playing staccato on the lowest string of a downtuned or extended-range guitar, e.g. 1:09 of MAKE TOTAL DESTROY (although the whole song is djent as fuck 🤘😈🤘). On this track, the lowest string is 8 semitones below standard. Colloquially, the guitarist is "almost playing bass".
NeO was probably aware of djent at the time of release, but my understanding is that the compositions on Portal of I (1) are more black metal influenced, i.e. NeO is a "prog-ification" of black metal, and (2) predate the online djent movement. NeO's next album actually did venture a little bit into djent territory since it was recorded with extended range guitars in that instrument's standard tuning.
Holy shit that song is metal aff!! I didn't know that's what djent specifically referred to and I've been listening to a lot of Gojira and Meshuggah for months. Thanks for that tidbit.
Theme Song for The Secret of Monkey Island (Using the Roland MT-32 which was an external and semi professional music synth device for those that aren't familiar)
And to show what the difference is and why I find it amazing here is a comparison with just a few seconds of the song on each of a bunch of different sound devices. This was possible with live synth at home in 1990 or actually earlier but this is one of the best examples.
Like many people I'm not sure I actually have a real favorite but this is what came to mind first along with several songs from the Chrono Trigger soundtrack. Chrono Trigger is also one of the shining examples of taking a limited older sound device and wringing every last drop of capability out of it. So clearly an obsession of mine with music is created under technical limitations.
I would put something from the Kirite album form him but it is basically not available anywhere for streaming at least not in English searchable websites. I did find a torrent for it along with hundreds of other songs of his but didn't want to go that far in sharing on this sort of thread.
I'll add that I probably should have just posted a Chrono Trigger track in the first place since while I'm unsure of my favorite music the game itself has been my personal number one game for a couple decades now.
I had to check to see if this was an anime OP lol. Fantastic song. I've always liked this style of... I don't know what genre this is, so I'll just say Japanese music.
Hard to pick a single one, so here are a few:
Destiny Potato - Addict
David Maxim Micic - Where is Now?
Dream Theater - Learning to Live (the version from Live Scenes from New York)
Dimmu Borgir - Kings of the Carnival Creation
..I hope you're not short on time. It's all about the buildup.
Ok ok. I picked Addict and Learning to live. I'll start with Addict and sheeesh i wasn't expecting it to slap that hard. I love me some Djent and this satiated my taste buds pretty well.
10/10
Learning to live was also fantastic. A bit long but was melodious all through.
Bad bunny is always a treat to listen to. This particular song makes me feel like i should be in the club. The constant beat switches also add to that giving it that DJ vibe.
Dadi Freyr - Think About Things
Solid track. Nice bass groove.
8/10
I just want his voice to narrate my life for a bit. Also, OP, you need to drop your favourite so we can judge you too
Hmm let's see. Hard to pick one, but I have to go for this:
Bali - Zaylevelten
Not my thing but not bad. Drum beat is gonna be stuck in my head now though. 7/10
Fair play man. Thanks for listening 👍
Fun jam, I enjoyed that.
All his music is a fun wholesome bop really. He was a Eurovision contestant during covid so his second entry after the shutdown was a love song to his wife for their 10 year anniversary.
Only Fire - Double Penetration (NSFW)
Holy fuck, that was a hard listen😭
I give it 7/10. Good beat, but i was cringing all through the song. Sorry!
NOFX - The Decline Live at Red Rocks w/ Baz's Orchestra
19 fucking mins i can't listen to it all gang😭🙏
I actually prefer this version over the album version. Sure, the sound could be improved here and there. But it's punkrock in the end. Doesn't need to be perfect.
Too much good stuff out there for me to have a favourite, so here's what I'm listening to as I leave this comment.
Is that an all female band? That's sick🤘
I can't help but hear some Gojira/Meshuggah influence, and I'm a big fan of those two bands.
So, that's a solid 9/10 from me
Yep all women.
You're welcome, glad you enjoyed the post
Telescope - Hiatus Kaiyote
Genuinely any of the full length songs on the album tho...
This song is fantastic WTH!! This track is so clean, it's crazy!!
11/10. I'm def checking out the whole album
It breaks my heart then to tell you I lied, Longcat is my favorite song
Aaaah i see what you're doing. You're trying to bait me into rating more than one song because i liked the first one ;). I'll grant you one more rate.
9/10. I feel it's too short to be as good as the first, but still an excellent song.
Gives me a Stevie Wonder vibe in his prime.
Quadeca and Maruja - CASPER
It kinda needs the buildup of the album for the full effect tho
Based Quadeca enjoyer
10/10 as always 🗿
Quadinky does it once again. 11/10 no notes
I swear, he's taken over all my playlists lol, just can't find that sound elsewhere :3
Pat The Bunny - Compost Yuppie Scum
Wth is this song😂.
10/10 for based lyrics 🗿
One of my favourites is definitely: Queen - The Show Must Go On
Not my favourite queen song, but enjoyable as always.
7/10
Don't know that i have a definitive "favorite", but
Pink Floyd - Time
Timeless (heh) Pink Floyd classic right here
9/10
Face Down - The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus
Not bad. I feel like I've heard too much of this style of rock though and have grown tired of it.
5/10
Thanks for responding! This has been a good casual conversation.
I'll drop my favorite drinking song:
Qntal - Indiscrete
And yes, I know full well I'm a nerd.
This some shit they play in Viking movies when they hoist their battle ship sails, and burst into a song and dance with booze at their behest😭🙏
I'll give 7/10. It's not bad at all
TIL that
German electro-medievalis a genre. Reminds me a bit of Värttinä, which is 100% complimentary.BBVD - The Boogie Bumper
Got my boogie bumper out of my seat :D
Nice! I was hoping someone would post some nice swing—at least i think that's what it's called.
Very good. 8/10
Röyksopp - Eple
Didn't realise this song was older than me till i checked😅. Sounds like a 2020 song. Way ahead of it's time imo
9/10
The whole album Melody AM is a masterpiece. Agreed that it was ahead of its time.
I'll be sure to listen to the album👍
Home - Jeff Williams
This gave me goosebumps🥹
9/10
Can't say I have a all-time favourite but my favourite right now is Watch Your Mouth by The Backseat Lovers. I heard it in a cafe yesterday and got hooked on the band.
This is really really good. I think i might be hooked too
8/10
The Damned - Melody Lee
Not bad, a bit dry for my taste. I've said elsewhere in this thread that i prefer more punchier rock.
5/10
Something completely different: My favorite of the week
Eden - by Hania Rani
https://tidal.com/browse/track/192326406?u
Beautiful song. Very relaxing.
8/10
Didn't understand a word, but i liked the song. That chorus is mad🔥
8/10
Nor do I! It's something like "we don't know anything about those drugs" but they do and they're hiding from the police. Or something, based on the YouTube comments.
Debaser - Pixies
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvldypUz9w8
Not bad. I will say that I've come to like much punchier rock music than the classic rock flavour. I could've seen myself enjoying this much more back in my ACDC phase—which wasn't that long ago tbh
I give 6/10
Rhythm is a dancer.
The rhythm was somewhat dry for my tastes, but i still danced nevertheless haha!
6/10
Hope your dance never leaves you.
I have a lot of favorites, and here's one of them:
Burn Ritual - Bringer Of Evil
I like rock and metal, but this one i feel is a bit too repetitive with that riff. The MV is good though.
5/10
fair enough! thanks for checking it out!
They Might Be Giants, "Man It's so Loud in Here"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtaLKvini4k&list=RDKtaLKvini4k&start_radio=1
Not my taste tbh.
Have to give it a 5/10
Thank you for listening...i have found everyones's choices delicious, 7/10
"We Can Dream" by Creo (link goes to Tidal)
I can listen to just this song for hours and it doesn't get boring.
Edit: here is YT link if you prefer it.
Creo? I love creo. GD players know. This song is also pretty good.
7/10
Aphex Twin - XMAS_EVET10 [120] (thanaton3 mix)
Very long, but overall not too shabby.
7/10
The one that pops up in my head is https://.youtube.com/watch?v=5C2LJE2SYfE. And i very much like the meaning "buy strawberries instead of war machines". I wish some high ranking israelies would value this song more (i know that the band was at popular there a decade ago)

I believe I would've been able to better value this song had i understood its content—I believe that's Hebrew? Unable to interpret the lyrics, i unfortunately have to rate this what i would usually rate songs of this flavour:
6/10
(No need to apologise for anything 👍)
My favorite song changes on a weekly basis, lol
This is this week's hit:
Daily Bread - Spaceships on I-285
Wow, what a wild ride! That's a lot of genres packed into one song. Still thoroughly enjoyable.
7/10
Guzleme - Romano
Well that was interesting. Doesn't really match my taste though.
5/10
Haha, yeah, that one is out there.
What are you playing this on? Earbuds with no bass or something that has full range?
This one is good if you can have a range
I'm using some cheap wired earbuds. I believe they've got a fair bit of bass though.
I like that song a bit better, but i prefer more swing to my jazz: like this. Any idea what language that was btw?
I'll say 6/10 for that one though
SONATA ARCTICA - I Have A Right
Because my parents suck, so this is my anthem.
Edit: Disclaimer: I don't listen to much English songs so like... you know... pls don't be like "my tastes suck" because I haven't gotten a chance to really explore.
Btw, Any tips on how to find cool music?
I typically like more punchy rock music, but this one has a strong message and strong MV, so I'll give it a

I quite like Three Rings by Grizzly Bear.
Also, good luck listening to everything :) I'll join you in listening to at least some of them, this is a nice random mixture of music to try!
Fantastic song. This is the flavour of alt rock songs i enjoy, and I'll be listening to every song posted in this thread, so nobody's missing out🗿
8/10
Animosity by The Warning, they're actually a Mexican rock band! I love their music. It's one of my favorites, but I have too many to count.
https://open.spotify.com/track/3If1A3kmA96TVgxwuAZDB2
Hans gruber and the die hards - we're all gonna die
Not bad. Fairly catchy
6/10
I can't have a favorite, but man we wore out the newest Fontaines DC album. On that record, the last song is "Favorite". This was a fantastic listen. Very well done song and fantastic singing from the performer. Just to really appreciate this one, i went ahead and listened to the original, and i must say this version is much better.
9/10
Sorry I am late
Swastik the band - Jogi - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OD7d1e1mwyQ
I usually like the music more than lyrics, but most of my favorites are lyricals, and this has best of lytrics and the music. there is flute, guitar, indian classic and western stuff all mixed. It is my daily alarm.
This was fantastic. Beautifully produced and well orchestrated with a good MV too
9/10
Streetlight Manifesto - Somewhere in the Between
Interesting song. Not too much of my style though.
5/10
Fair enough
This song only has 484 views over 3 years, but I really like the tune.
Simple Man - Men In Kilts
This wasn't bad. Unfortunately I'm not really a fan of this type of country music. Very 60s—correct me if I'm wrong.
I'll give 5/10
It's actually from 2022. I'd call it somewhat new age folk as I know they have an electric violin. Thanks for checking out the song! Love the idea for this post.
Squirrels
Y'know what? I originally didn't like this and was probably gonna give it like a 4, but for some reason the tune is really catchy.
6/10 because this is gonna be stuck in my head for a week
Too many favourites to choose from, but the last one I listened to is this: Bruce Springsteen - I'm on fire.
This was nice. I wish it went on longer though
8/10
As Icicles Fall by Ne Obliviscaris
Long af, but totally worth it. Solid heavy metal (Djent?)
8/10
Holy shit that song is metal aff!! I didn't know that's what djent specifically referred to and I've been listening to a lot of Gojira and Meshuggah for months. Thanks for that tidbit.
Justin Hawkes - Better Than Gold
https://youtube.com/watch?v=W9A9MJ-Z40U
What in the... At first i was thinking, "What's country doing posted on a DnB channel?", then that beat switch happens. This was enjoyable.
7/10
Dark Tranquility - Misery's crown
This wasn't too bad.
I'll say 6/10
Mr Jukes - Angels / Your Love
A song of two halves, where the background bass line becomes the front row brass.
That was a fantastic piece!
10/10
Ram Jam World - Planet Earth (ft. Lisa)
Finally a DnB track. Absolutely gorgeous vocals and breaks!
9/10
Damn that's tough. I would say either Lola Montez by Volbeat or Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd
2 very good selections from you here, but inevitably, Pink Floyd has to come out on top.
9/10 for Comfortably Numb and 7/10 for Lola Montez
Can't argue with that! :)
Walk with me in hell - Lamb of God
Fantastic! Just the sort of metal i enjoy!
8/10
Here Comes a Regular, The Replacements
Not bad. I feel like it's missing drums though.
5.5/10
Favorite is an impossible question. There is so much good music that is incomparable.
So instead here's a track I've been vibing to for a while now:
JET - Polkadot Stingray
And if you prefer, here's a track I've specifically been vibing to *lately*:
Better - Cody Fry
These are fantastic. You have great taste in music!
Both songs are a 9/10
thanks for gassing me up :3
feel free to peruse my grotesquely bloated "Current obsession - Japan" playlist: https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1qp2kWRqMd77nsVXr2jG5um4DpMWNn5Y
Also Cody Fry (and the guitarist on that track, Cory Wong) is all around fantastic and worth a dive
I'll surely be checking your playlist out. Thanks👍
Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence
https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=1OZDaRhHHyM
Great song. It's like a journey. I especially like that last bit 20 seconds to the end of the song
8/10
Crack Rock Steady - Choking Victim
I do not really fw this. No hard feelings
4/10
Boy named Sue - Mr John Cash
Fantastic song and lyrics. Johnny Cash is always a treat to listen to as always.
7/10
https://youtu.be/S_dDfYL5Irw
L.A. by The Fall
Great song. Could come off as a bit monotonous, but it's still great sonically.
7/10
Thanks for listening! This is a great post.
Glad you enjoyed!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mbvWn1EY6g
Motorhead Ace of Spades
Everything i love in a rock and roll song. Fast paced, intense solos and grimey vocals.
8/10. Thoroughly enjoyed
Fun fact. Lemmy was in part named after the front man of Motorhead, Lemmy Kilmister.
Oh i didn't know that at all. You learn something new everyday!
Theme Song for The Secret of Monkey Island (Using the Roland MT-32 which was an external and semi professional music synth device for those that aren't familiar)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3dB0qEcG20
And to show what the difference is and why I find it amazing here is a comparison with just a few seconds of the song on each of a bunch of different sound devices. This was possible with live synth at home in 1990 or actually earlier but this is one of the best examples.

Like many people I'm not sure I actually have a real favorite but this is what came to mind first along with several songs from the Chrono Trigger soundtrack. Chrono Trigger is also one of the shining examples of taking a limited older sound device and wringing every last drop of capability out of it. So clearly an obsession of mine with music is created under technical limitations.
Not bad. I will say that it lacks a fair bit of variation for my palette.
5/10. If you had instead posted a crono trigger track though, you'd have received a 10/10. The best from that era.
Here's my favourite.
Excellent track from CT. How about one extra since you like Mitsuda's work with Chrono Trigger.
This is from an orchestrated reimagining of some of the music of Xenogears. Not some fan project either, made by Mitsuda himself.
Xenogears Creid - 03 Balto https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwnNVOl4fx
I would put something from the Kirite album form him but it is basically not available anywhere for streaming at least not in English searchable websites. I did find a torrent for it along with hundreds of other songs of his but didn't want to go that far in sharing on this sort of thread.
I'll add that I probably should have just posted a Chrono Trigger track in the first place since while I'm unsure of my favorite music the game itself has been my personal number one game for a couple decades now.
Video is unplayable :(. But you just reminded me that Zenogears is in my backlog and i should probably get to playing it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnSW8ian29w
I had to check to see if this was an anime OP lol. Fantastic song. I've always liked this style of... I don't know what genre this is, so I'll just say Japanese music.
8/10
I think this one is from one piece, I haven't watched though so I'm not sure.
I friend introduced me to her, I don't listen to any other Japanese music, but Ado is great!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FliVTcX8bQ
You all have a favorite song?! Been listening to a lot of Kings Of Convenience as of late though. Very Peaceful in those rather turbulent times.
This is good. I really like this
8/10
La Canaille - Jamais Nationale
I've never listened to a French rap song up until this point. It's very catchy. I wish I understood the lyrics though.
7/10
Based lyrics. YouTube can auto-translate.
That's a lotta songs mate. Gimme your best 2
Impossible to choose. Pick any 2.
Ok ok. I picked Addict and Learning to live. I'll start with Addict and sheeesh i wasn't expecting it to slap that hard. I love me some Djent and this satiated my taste buds pretty well.
10/10
Learning to live was also fantastic. A bit long but was melodious all through.
7/10
whoa haven't seen a destiny potato reference in a while. absolute banger of a band tho
I can‘t decide on a favourite song. Here is my favourite song of my favourite band: Fluisteraars - De Doornen
Wow this song is long. Too long i might say. It's some good metal, but it's a lot to take in, and it's constant metal, no rest breaks.
6/10 for me
I can totally understand. If I listen to the whole album it feels like two songs to me :)
Thank you for having a listen though :)
You're welcome 👍
Mine changes pretty frequently. Right now it's Flesh and Electricity by Camp Cope.
Not bad. I'm not a big alt rock guy except for a handful of songs. Always mice to see all-girl bands though.
5/10
https://youtu.be/jCQ_6XbATPc
Hard to pick a favorite song because it depends on my mood, but this is a goodie.
Bad bunny is always a treat to listen to. This particular song makes me feel like i should be in the club. The constant beat switches also add to that giving it that DJ vibe.
