Women of Ask Lemmy, what are your thoughts on this phrase, "if the bra and panties match, you weren't the one who decided to have sex tonight."

NSFW

Had a 'big sis' friend tell my naive and timid ass that saying a couple decades ago. Got reminded of it (not like that) today and had a chuckle.

For context, if a woman is wearing matching bra and panties it's likely she knew you'd be seeing them later that night.

So, I'm curious, you think it's true? Any other thoughts?

Sure, but that's still not necessarily sex?

One can also wear fun undergarments to a date and then decide not to undress or have sex - usually I think of it as "in case something happens" rather than expecting it from the outset. If nobody sees it, it's not a disappointment, it's just fun regardless.

Not sure the saying actually comes from a rom-com, but I sure could see it. Dumb. Can't even wear a set of goddamn underwear without someone overanalyzing it.

I don't like the phrase. It just feels bad, idk. If she put in effort to wear nice underwear for you, its probably one of many little details she put into your date. Idk. I'm kind of a prude.

It also kind of feels like something a dudebro might say later after he pressured his drunk date into something she didn't want to do.

To be clear it was a 29 yr old straight woman telling an 18 yr old straight guy this. (Who maintained a platonic relationship of "bis sis/lil bro" for many years.)

I'll just say, as a guy, I absolutely had pairs of boxer briefs I'd wear when I was going out as a younger man. I even still have some, but I'm married with two kids, and so they're for when I'm staying in now.

But that being said, just because I wore them didn't mean I was hooking up with someone. And that could be her choice or my choice, it's gotta be a mutual thing. So at the most it indicates a potential intent. But I had times I wore my shit and chose not to for one reason or another at the end of the night. And probably ten times more the choice was made for me.

Everything is so expensive now. If it doesn't have stains or holes I'm counting it as a matching set.

lol

I never thought I'd get into thrift shopping. Now I regularly visit a couple local thrift shops and have gotten some pretty decent finds. (Which excites me more than it probably should. Being an adult is not what I expected. lΓ© sigh )

This is a great idea. Some most of my favorite undergarments aren't made anymore and all the new stuff is so uncomfortable.

I imagine some day I'll have enough space for a period drawer with all the comfy stained panties too wear while having bad PMS and periods. Someday!

6

It does rub me the wrong way too, implying men are in general not in control of their relationships and their opinion matters less.

7

I like my stuff to match, so it wouldn't be them deciding. Me getting into bed with all my friends tho, that might be a reason for me to want it to match

My ex (from a 7yr long relationship) just wore whatever was most comfortable. Typically that meant they didn't match. Not even sure she actually had any matching undies now you mention it. She hated buying bras.

I think that if they don't match then you just smear garbage juice on them until they do.
