Looking for a wayland based tiling window manager

Hello all, looking for a good autotiling window manager that is wayland based but is NOT hyprland. Sway seems to be an option but I don't really want to install a plugin to make it autotile... Anyway, does anybody else have any other suggestions?

Recently switched from sway to niri on my laptop and loving it so far. The tiling+scrolling behavior feels very natural to me.

yeah +1 for Niri. I love it. in most cases I don't even bother with workspaces anymore because of Niri, makes things easier and the vim nav is perfect. great documentation, it's fast, and very easy to configure.

I do recommend sway if you don't find an alternative, it works really well. But yeah, no auto-tiling by default.
Can I ask why are you against Hyprland ?

EDIT: The arch wiki has a list

Thought it was common knowledge at this point...

Creator of hyperland:

[A trans person] joined the Discord server and made a big deal out of their pronouns [..] because they put their pronouns in their nickname and made a big deal out of them because people were referring to them as “he” [misgendering them], which, on the Internet, let’s be real, is the default. And so, one of the moderators changed the pronouns in their nickname to “who/cares”. […] Let’s be real, this isn’t like, calling someone the N-word or something.

mango is pretty sick, but im sticking with niri for now. theres something about the simplicity of it that just feels right for everyday use.

looking forward to mangowc getting more popular and maybe some updates to the overview and id look at giving it a go.

Not a tiling window manager, but would Cosmic possibly serve your usecase?

River!! It's a Wayland dynamic tiler, which sounds like it's what you're looking for. I really like it. I've been using it for a few years and have been happy.

Note that they're currently undergoing a significant rewrite for the 0.4 release which will break people's setups. However, the 0.3 branch will continue to be maintained indefinitely for those who don't want to switch.

undergoing a significant rewrite for the 0.4 release

I plan to try it when it's ready. Some time next century at this rate.

It is "ready". The 0.3 branch and the 0.4 branch can be thought of as different compositors, and the 0.3 branch is a fully-functional compositor in its own right. Some people will never upgrade to 0.4 because they either prefer 0.3 or can't be bothered to make the transition.

Also the way you quoted that made it sound like the 0.4 release has been a WIP for years. Believe it or not 0.3 was not the first River release... They haven't been planning the RWM release the whole time.

Try mangowc. Pretty new but promising. Also has scrolling if you're into that.

window manager that is wayland based

The term you want is "compositor" rather than "window manager". Under Wayland, the relatively-modest role of the X11 window manager has been replaced by the larger compositor, which does a superset of what window managers did.

I don’t really want to install a plugin to make it autotile

I don't know what "autotiling" is. Looking online, I see various people using the term for different things. A script for sway uses this term and states that it automatically-selects between horizontal or vertical splitting orientation based on the currently-focused window dimensions. Is this the functionality that you're asking for?

Also requires a plugin, so probably not your thing, but KDE with the Krohnkite KWinScript also works decently well.

I actually took the advice here and used niri and it works great!

right on! cool to hear this update.

the new trend in custom quickshells is pretty interesting. you might want to check out dank material shell or noctalia shell. even if you dont end up using their bars, you can get some cool themeing, lock screen and widgets from either. cheers!
